Not all ways of scoring in EA FC 26 are equally effective. Sometimes, a carefully placed finesse shot is ideal, while at other times, a powerful strike is the better option. When the ball is in the air, heading it is usually the best approach, but directing it away from the goalkeeper can be tricky. A great way to do this in EA FC 26 is with a downward header, and here’s how to execute it.
How to Do a Downward Header in EA FC 26
Prepare to Put in the Work on the Training Ground
Unlike many other in-game shots and attacks, the downward header isn’t listed in the game’s control settings. Because of this, many players think you can’t directly control whether your player aims their header downwards towards the ground.
During my time playing EA FC 26, I’ve discovered a useful technique. If you hold down the RB button on Xbox or the R1 button on PlayStation while simultaneously pressing B or Circle as the ball comes towards your player in the air, they will usually perform a downward header.
In EA FC 26, having players who are tall and have a high heading stat will improve your ability to score with downward headers.
It’s important to realize that the angle of your header changes slightly each time you attempt it. To achieve a noticeable ‘drop’ in the ball’s path, use minimal power – simply tap the B/Circle button just as the ball reaches your player. Mastering this technique, similar to the low-driven shot, requires practice, so we recommend utilizing the practice arena to perfect your timing and execution. It may take some trial and error, but with dedication, you’ll be able to consistently perform this skill. Practice is key!
This is especially helpful when your player is near the goalie, because it forces the goalkeeper to react quickly and drop low to make a save. Or, if there are many players in the penalty area, a downward-directed header can be an effective way to get the ball over defenders positioned on the goal line, who are trying to intercept aerial clearances.
Just because you press RB + B / R1 + Circle when an aerial ball is coming towards you doesn’t always mean your player will head it down. Sometimes they’ll be better positioned to volley it instead. To encourage headers, try using lofted crosses (LB + X/ L1 + Square). These crosses will deliver the ball to your player at a higher altitude, making a header the more natural play.
