The new first-person shooter, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, aims to realistically depict the Vietnam War by placing players in massive jungle battles. Team 17 and Expression Games are dedicated to making the game as authentic as possible, focusing on details like weapons, movements, and sound. They’ve been collaborating with the Royal Armouries since 2024 to achieve this.
The developers of Hell Let Loose: Vietnam worked with the Royal Armouries to get real-world details for the game. They took pictures, made scans, and recorded videos and sounds of weapons from the Armouries’ large collection. This ensures players get a historically accurate experience of what it was like to be a soldier in the Vietnam War, offering a truly immersive glimpse into the past.
Players can choose to fight as either the US Armed Forces or the North Vietnamese Army. They’ll be able to use vehicles like tanks and helicopters, along with weapons like mortars, or they can focus on building tunnels and using stealth tactics to create ambushes.
Team 17 And Expression Games Team Up With The Royal Armouries
The Hell Let Loose series aims to deliver intense and realistic battles. It emphasizes historically accurate weapons and strategies, and to achieve this, they’ve partnered with the Royal Armouries, bringing genuine historical knowledge to the game.
Collaborating with the Royal Armouries and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson was a truly special opportunity for our team. Their in-depth expertise and impressive collection of historical weapons were essential in ensuring the visual accuracy, animations, and sound design of Hell Let Loose: Vietnam.
– Matt White, Creative Director at Expression Games
The Royal Armouries Museum has a history of collaborating with the gaming community. Jonathan Ferguson, their Keeper of Firearms & Artillery, often appears on the EXP Youtube Channel to discuss how accurately weapons are portrayed in video games. He provides expert insight into their historical context.
The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds holds a vast collection of historical items – think swords, guns, cannons, and even the armor worn by an Indian war elephant. Driven by a goal to protect history and make it accessible, this collaboration between HLL and the Royal Armouries demonstrates how video games can be an effective and engaging tool for learning about the past. It’s proof that entertainment and education can go hand-in-hand.
We’re a world-leading museum of arms and armour, and we’re dedicated to making our collections and knowledge accessible to everyone. This collaboration lets us add realistic historical detail to interactive games, giving players a more immersive experience and new ways to connect with the history and traditions that the Royal Armouries protects. We believe this partnership will offer vivid in-game detail and fresh engagement with our collections.
– Jack Wanstall, Senior Licensing & Partnerships Manager, Royal Armouries
The Royal Armouries provided the main source of visual, animation, and sound references for the weapons in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, which is scheduled to be released in 2026. If you’re new to the Hell Let Loose series, the original game based on World War II is still being updated with fresh content. A brand-new, massive city map will be added this November.
