World of Warcraft is simplifying its endgame gear upgrades in Midnight. When the new World of Warcraft expansion launches, players won’t have to gather Valorstones anymore. Instead, upgrading gear will only require Crests, making the process much easier.
Originally known as Flightstones in Dragonflight, Valorstones are a currency in World of Warcraft: The War Within used to fully upgrade your equipment. Although the changes to how gear improves in these expansions have generally been well-received, Valorstones have been the least liked aspect of an otherwise working system.
Valorstones are Gone in World of Warcraft: Midnight
Good news for players: you won’t have to deal with Valorstones anymore when Midnight is released. World of Warcraft recently had a live question-and-answer session where game director Ion Hazzikostas discussed how gear will work at the endgame. Around the 59-minute mark, Hazzikostas explained that the current system has “too many complicated parts,” and that Valorstones will no longer be used as a currency starting with Midnight. After reaching the endgame, players will simply use Crests to upgrade their gear in World of Warcraft, without needing to collect a separate currency.
Furthermore, the Crest system is getting a simpler design. Hazzikostas announced that they’re planning to align each Crest tier with its corresponding gear power level. Essentially, this means that instead of some Crests working for multiple tiers, gear from the Champion track will use a specific type of Crest, gear from the Hero track will use another, and so on.

For years, gamers have wanted a change to this system in World of Warcraft. Valorstones usually start a new expansion season in short supply, but become plentiful as the season goes on. This creates early-game frustration as players struggle to get enough, and then leads to wasted currency later because they can’t spend all of their Valorstones before hitting the 2000 cap. While letting players carry over Valorstones between Seasons 2 and 3 of The War Within was a good start, many hoped Blizzard would remove the unpopular currency altogether, and they’re thrilled to see that happen in Midnight.
Valorstones are receiving a significant update before players finish with them in World of Warcraft: The War Within Season 3’s Turbo-Boost. Starting October 21, the currency will become Warbound, allowing free trading between your characters – likely with the 25% trade fee seen in Season 2. Since Season 3 is anticipated to run until the release of Midnight, this change will make Valorstones account-wide for however long the currency remains available after the Turbo-Boost goes live.
