As a long-time gamer with over two decades of experience, I find the recent revelation that AI-generated skins have been sold in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 without my knowledge or consent to be both intriguing and concerning.
I recently came across an article on Wired that raised some intriguing claims about my favorite game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The piece suggested that during my gaming sessions, Activision was using artificial intelligence to create and sell unique skins for my characters. In simpler terms, the company was generating customized outfits for my in-game avatars using AI technology and offering them up for sale. Quite fascinating!
Based on the findings of the report, Activision Blizzard initiated the use of artificial intelligence in their games as early as the beginning of 2023. By the end of the same year, they reportedly sold the first cosmetic skin generated with AI in Modern Warfare 3. The report strongly suggests that “Yokai’s Wrath,” one such skin, was partly developed through AI technology.
A ex-employee from Activision who contributed to Modern Warfare 3 shares with me that the sequence of events reported by Wired is accurate. During team meetings, the leadership would proudly showcase their use of AI technologies like Midjourney and so on, for improving production schedules.
Weekly emails across the studios also consisted of AI-generated skins, they continued.
Based on my personal experience as a long-time fan of Call of Duty games and following the developments within the gaming industry, it seems that the extent to which AI has influenced the creation of skins and cosmetics in Call of Duty remains uncertain. However, from conversations with developers, I’ve learned that using AI tools to enhance creative processes was quite commonplace. It’s fascinating how technology continues to shape the gaming landscape, allowing for more efficient workflows and innovative designs. Yet, as a gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the human touch in these creations and whether they’re truly unique or just refined through AI. The intersection of art and technology is an intriguing one, and I eagerly anticipate discovering more about how it unfolds in the world of Call of Duty.
As a long-term Microsoft shareholder and avid gamer, I’ve followed the company’s news closely over the years. Earlier this year, I was taken aback when I heard that Microsoft would be letting go of 1900 employees, including some at Activision Blizzard. This news came as a shock to me, given Microsoft’s reputation for being a stable and growing tech company.
