As a long-time Norland player with countless hours spent managing my settlement, I can’t stress enough the importance of starting strong with key buildings that cater to various essential needs of my growing community. Among these must-haves are the Altar, Library, Tavern, and Dormitory.

In simpler terms, Norland is a medieval-themed colony-building game, blending elements of Rimworld and Crusader Kings 3. Initially, players focus on expanding a humble settlement into a prosperous city, aiming for it to become the core of a vast domain. To make a strong foundation in Norland, understanding the initial construction priorities is crucial for a successful beginning.

In Norland, certain essential structures cannot be overlooked, even if their significance isn’t immediately clear to new players. For instance, a Lumbermill seems intuitive, but a Library might not appear crucial at first. However, every settlement will initially include a Hall, three Lord’s Houses, one Dormitory, and a Market. Beyond the Hall, players will eventually require additional structures; yet, there are more urgent tasks to tackle beforehand.

6 Lumbermill

Produces Wood

Because wood is essential for constructing various buildings and has multiple uses, it’s recommended to establish the Lumbermill as your initial project in Norland. Even more, considering their significance, players might even think about setting up a second Lumbermill at an early stage.

Lumbermills ought to be situated close to forests yet not overly distant from the main village. This placement benefits workers by reducing their travel distance. Initially, players may construct roads for faster transportation and heightened output, but these come at a gold expense.

5 Rutabaga Field

Produces Rutabaga, Which Is Eaten & Turned Into Moonshine

  • Building Type: Resource
  • Cost: 40 Wood

In the fictional land of Norland, rutabagas hold great significance as both a fundamental food source and the primary ingredient for creating moonshine, a basic alcohol. At the beginning of the game, players are provided with an adequate supply of food and alcohol. However, to ensure a steady food supply and kickstart agriculture, constructing a Rutabaga Field is highly recommended among the initial building projects.

Players should consider placing a Rutabaga Field on land with rich soil, and aim to arrange it such that more fertile areas are available for future field expansions. It’s recommended to reserve the most fertile spots for Rye and Hops Fields, as they become crucial once unlocked.

4 Altar

Praying At An Altar Replenishes 10% Of Piety

  • Building Type: Service
  • Cost: 30 Wood

In the world of Norland, religion plays a significant role, just like hunger, rest, and other essential needs for your characters. To maintain their spiritual well-being, or “Piety” levels, they must engage in religious practices regularly. An early construction of an Altar becomes crucial since praying there allows characters to restore 10% of their Piety.

In due course, players will come across the fact that Temples hold greater advantages, yet the Altar continues to serve various purposes. For instance, it is where Norland weddings and funerals take place. Unlike Temples, no laborers are needed to operate or oversee the Altar; it runs independently.

3 Library

Lords Can Study & Rewrite Books To Gain Knowledge

  • Building Type: Service
  • Cost: 40 Wood

In Norland, the Library holds great significance as it serves as a hub where lords engage in deep study and revision of literature. Through this process, they acquire valuable knowledge that ultimately paves the way for the creation of advanced technologies, resulting in the production of superior goods.

Every new community needs to begin with some literature, so constructing the Library as soon as possible is advisable. Each book requires ample time for study, which varies based on the Intelligence level of the ruling lord and their spare time. The Library is ideally situated near the Lord’s Residences since only they can benefit from it. Moreover, players should remember to purchase new books whenever the Holy Caravan visits.

2 Tavern

Sells Alcohol To Peasants

  • Building Type: Service
  • Cost: 25 Wood

In Norland, players cannot brew alcohol at the beginning of the game, but they can begin with an ample stock of beer. Yet, without a Tavern, peasants won’t be able to buy alcohol, leading to their unhappiness due to insufficient rest.

After constructing a tavern, players have the ability to adjust the costs of beer and moonshine, as well as the wages for their employees. It is recommended to set the beer price somewhat above its initial cost to ensure an adequate supply before moonshine production becomes available.

1 Dormitory

Houses 10 Peasants

  • Building Type: Housing
  • Cost: 30 Wood

To accommodate a larger population and expand their village, players must construct additional homes. These new residents will then be productive members of the community, contributing to its growth. Immigrant peasants may arrive based on various circumstances, but without adequate housing, they will sadly become homeless and discontented.

Players begin with a single Dormitory accommodating ten peasants. However, due to the anticipated influx of migrants, an additional Dormitory is necessary to be constructed relatively soon. In the upper left corner, the number of incoming migrants for the next day is indicated. As the game progresses, players must continue constructing Dormitories as needed until they gain access to Peasant Houses, which offer greater comfort and increased happiness for their occupants.
