As a long-time gamer and avid fan of the Mortal Kombat series, I can’t help but feel frustrated by the recent update for Mortal Kombat 1 on Xbox. With a file size of over 120 GB, it’s hard not to compare this to the much smaller updates on other consoles, which only took up around 11 GB.
The new update for “Mortal Kombat 1” on Xbox necessitates a large download, which isn’t required on other gaming consoles. This week, NetherRealm unveiled an update patch for “Mortal Kombat 1” in conjunction with the debut of DLC character Takeda Takahashi and his support fighter Ferra. Besides readying the game for these newcomers, this update brought a multitude of bug corrections and adjustments to the overall gameplay experience for all other characters within “Mortal Kombat 1.”
At its launch, the roster for Mortal Kombat 1 was filled with updated versions of iconic characters. Since then, new additions have been introduced through DLC packs. The first pack included Invincible’s Omni-Man, as well as Homelander from The Boys and Peacemaker from DC, who joined later. Quan Chi and Ermac, initially antagonists in the game’s story, also became playable characters.
In the latest update for Mortal Kombat 1, Takeda from Mortal Kombat X was added, but the large file size of this update has left some Xbox players disappointed. According to Reddit users such as Lcomb0817, the update is a significant 120.84 GB in size on Xbox, which is almost equivalent to the digital game itself. In contrast, the PlayStation version of the update only requires 11 GB, raising questions about why the Xbox update is so expansive.

As a gamer, I’ve experienced my share of large game updates that left me scratching my head. Just a few days ago, Fortnite dropped an update with a hefty 68 GB file size. Now, that’s not as colossal as Mortal Kombat 1’s patch, but it still gave Xbox players quite the hassle. Many of us were scrambling to clear up space or simply waiting for hours on end to download this update. Thankfully, Epic Games acknowledged the issue and assured us they are investigating the cause behind Fortnite’s Xbox update bloat. In the meantime, they suggested starting the download before our next gaming session to make things smoother.
Epic would also confirm that the issue with its latest Fortnite update was exclusive to the Xbox version, mirroring the situation with Mortal Kombat 1’s Takeda update patch. Neither NetherRealm nor WB Games has addressed the Xbox update at this time, and fans are still left scratching their heads at a seemingly routine download being nearly the size of the game it is meant to supplement. Many have speculated that these large file sizes are due to an issue at Microsoft, though the Xbox parent company also hasn’t addressed anything of the sort as of this writing.
