Highlights

  • Some DLCs completely alter a game’s story, turning heroes into villains, creating new beginnings, or introducing side stories.
  • Star Wars: Jedi Knight DLC introduces Mara Jade as a playable character, set 10 years after Dark Forces 2.
  • Dragon Age Inquisition DLC Trespasser uncovers the truth about Solas, linking it to the Inquisitor’s final challenge.

As a seasoned RPG gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of epic questlines and captivating expansions. But none have left me as enthralled and emotionally invested as the DLCs I’ve had the pleasure of playing in this list.

As someone who has dedicated countless hours to immersing myself in the vast worlds of video games, I can attest to the allure and excitement that downloadable content (DLC) brings to the table. Having completed a game from start to finish, there’s an undeniable sense of satisfaction that comes with it. However, the real magic lies in the unexpected twists and turns that DLCs can offer.

In some instances, these cases not only provide additional context for the players after they have completed the game but also significantly change the narrative’s direction in intriguing and unexpected ways. The roles of the heroes can be reversed, making them the antagonists instead, or the weary protagonist may call it quits, giving way to a completely new storyline unrelated to the player’s previous adventure.

7 Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Mysteries Of The Sith

Introducing One Of The Most Popular Characters Of SW Legends

Video Game DLCs That Completely Change The Story
  • Launch Date: 02/17/1998
  • Time to beat: 10-12 h.
  • Developer: Lucasfilm Games

In the expansive and renowned Star Wars universe, crafted by numerous skilled writers under George Lucas’ direction for the Expanded Universe, now known as SW Legends, there are countless beloved characters. One such character is Mara Jade (Skywalker). She was among the favorites and marked the debut of a significant female figure who had turned away from the Dark Side.

In the independent addition to “Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2,” Mara Jade was introduced as a playable character for the initial (hopefully not sole) time, assuming the role of Kyle Katarn’s apprentice. The game recounts the occurrences ten years subsequent to the conclusion of “Dark Forces 2” (Light Side), during which Katarn and Luke Skywalker established the Yavin Academy. As Katarn and his apprentice Mara are dispatched to explore an ancient Sith Ruin, Katarn succumbs to the Dark Side. Consequently, gamers assume control over Mara Jade, who wields a distinctive purple lightsaber – a first for fans of this hue on-screen, preceding even Samuel’s appearance.

6 Dragon Age Inquisition: Trespasser

The Story Behind The Story, The Truth Is Finally Revealed

Video Game DLCs That Completely Change The Story

Upon its release, players in “Dragon Age: Inquisition” were introduced to a colorful cast of characters, including the combat-loving Iron Bull and the distant Cassandra. however, the enigmatic Solas stood out as the most intriguing companion. Yet, it came as a shock when we discovered that he was actually the villain.

After completing the main storyline in “Dragon Age: Inquisition,” players have the opportunity to explore a new tale, which unfolds several years post-Rift crisis. The Inquisitor encounters a final challenge as the Inquisition begins to disband. Suddenly, Qunari raiders emerge, utilizing the Eluvian network for unexpected invasions in Orlais. There’s strong suspicion that Solas is orchestrating these attacks, and players will need to put an end to his schemes once and for all before diving into “Veilguard” DLC. This captivating add-on provides essential answers that every “Dragon Age” fan should not miss.

5 Skyrim: Dragonborn

Funny Thing, There’s Another Dragonborn, And He’s Evil

Video Game DLCs That Completely Change The Story

If players have finished arguing with dragons and looting Falmer tea parties, they’ll discover an entire island waiting to be explored. A charming dragon-blooded figure welcomes them as their gracious host on Solstheim, the island expansion in Skyrim represented by the last DLC, Dragonborn. Here, a fanatical group of dragon enthusiasts is throwing a wild party that the player was unfortunately not invited to.

It’s surprising to discover that there’s another Dragonborn, besides the original one, who leads a cult on an island and expects players to intervene. This plotline deviates significantly from the main story in Skyrim and transports us to a new area of Tamriel. However, this is similar to the experience offered by other Skyrim DLCs, such as Dawnguard, where players pick a side and act as if the Dragon Crisis wasn’t engulfing Skyrim.

4 The Witcher 3: Blood & Wine

The Perfect Closure For A Tired Monster Hunter, A Beautiful World Design

Video Game DLCs That Completely Change The Story

If “Blood & Wine” doesn’t provide the most satisfying ending to Geralt of Rivia’s journey, then no other conclusion can. In the picturesque, Arthurian-inspired land of Touissant, knights errant abound, vineyards flourish, and courtly intrigue never ceases. With one final (highly negotiated) monster-slaying assignment left to complete, Geralt prepares for an unlikely retirement. However, this narrative strays significantly from the established Witcher lore, as a Witcher’s only true retirement comes in the form of death – either naturally, when they grow old, or brutally, while carrying out their sworn duties against monstrous foes.

As a huge fan of The Witcher, I’m thrilled to embark on this vibrant new journey and uncover the many surprises in store for our beloved protagonist. Reconnecting with old friends like Regis, the Vampire, is just one of the delightful surprises that awaits us. The main quest is an exciting old-school vampire hunt, but it’s the side quests that truly make this DLC shine, offering a chance to explore the magical Toussaint region in a whole new light. And if you happen to come across a woman wielding a sword in a lake, remember Geralt’s wise words: “Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.”

3 Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Now That’s The Ending V Deserves, Is It? It Is, Right?

Video Game DLCs That Completely Change The Story

As a dedicated Cyberpunk 2077 fan, I can’t help but share my experience of venturing through Night City on a mission to find a cure for my Skull Invader issue. Among the numerous tasks I undertook, none compared to the reckless decision to plunge into the chaotic Dogtown district. This anarchic, lawless zone is ruled by a ruthless (former) military despot, who aims to bring down the New United States of America’s government. This DLC serves as the thrilling culmination of my journey and an absolute must-play for every Cyberpunk 2077 enthusiast. The game introduces captivating additions such as new weapons, airdrops, and engrossing side quests, enhancing the overall experience.

In Cyberpunk 2077, the primary attraction lies in assuming the role of a freelancer/mercenary without any loyalty to a specific faction. Consequently, it can come as an unexpected shift that Phantom Liberty compels players to choose a side and remain committed until the very end. This DLC appears to be a significant departure from the initial gameplay experience. Even Johnny Silverhand offers some comments on our restricted options, leading ultimately to the unveiling of V’s ultimate destination.

2 Fallout: New Vegas – Lonesome Road

Angry Mailman Meets Very Angry Freedom Fighter

Video Game DLCs That Completely Change The Story

In the thrilling denouement of my beloved Courier’s journey, I receive a mysterious summons from a enigmatic figure known as Ulysses, who once went by the alias of “Courier Six.” This elusive character played a pivotal role in shaping my character’s fate at the onset of the tale in “Fallout: New Vegas” by leaving me with a bullet wound to the face. Unlike the regular weekly missions to save the wasteland from impending doom, this DLC offers a fresh narrative for me to explore, focusing more on my quest for answers rather than the usual apocalyptic urgency.

As a dedicated fan of the Fallout series, I’ve found that the Lonesome Road DLC presents a fresh narrative twist, which some players may find challenging. For a long time, we’ve been anticipating a showdown with the main antagonist, who’s been lurking in the background, manipulating events from the shadows. But, what I’ve come to realize is that this DLC brings one of the most intriguing villains the Fallout franchise has ever seen: Ulysses. While the final confrontation might not be as explosive as we initially expected, the build-up and complexity of Ulysses’ character make this a must-play expansion for any serious Fallout fan.

1 Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide

A Side Story Where A Harper’s Apprentice Has To Save Faerûn

Video Game DLCs That Completely Change The Story

In the captivating role-playing game “Neverwinter Nights,” the primary tale unfolds as a mystifying pestilence ravages the renowned Jewel of the Sword Coast. As valiant heroes, players are summoned to action during this crisis. From probing the intricate maze-like streets of this Faerunian metropolis to exploring its colossal sewer networks, eliminating cultists, this game offers a rich and immersive experience.

As a fan, I can tell you that playing the Shadows of Undrentide DLC feels like a whole new experience. Instead of the usual routine, I found myself in the shoes of a blacksmith apprentice, but with a secret identity – I was actually a Harper, part of Faerün’s clandestine force for good. The storyline is self-contained and thrilling, as I embark on a quest to uncover who poisoned my mentors and thwart an evil sorcerer’s plan to obtain a dangerous set of ancient relics that could bring about destruction. Classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure at its best.
