DC: Suicide Squad Members Who Died On Missions

As a huge fan of the Suicide Squad, I’ve been moved to tears multiple times by the heart-wrenching deaths of some of its most memorable members. Each one has left a lasting impact on me, and I can’t help but reflect on their lives and what made their sacrifices so meaningful.

Under the leadership of Amanda Waller and known as Task Force X since the comics’ silver age, the Suicide Squad is a team of soldiers. They are given dangerous assignments with little to no chance of survival, explaining the squad’s solemn moniker.

In the DC comic world, the Suicide Squad, a group of unconventional heroes, undertake dangerous missions aware that they’re courting certain death. This squad consists of DC’s notorious villains who are presently serving time in prison. The name “Suicide Squad” rings true for this team, with each version featuring at least one member who met their end during the storyline.

8 Mongal

Mongal’s time was running out as she battled on the shores of Corto Maltese. With unyielding determination, she hurled herself at the enemy helicopter’s landing gear. Utilizing her raw power and bare hands, she managed to bring the helicopter crashing to the ground.

Despite her anticipation, the situation unexpectedly spun out of control. As she clung to the helicopter, it plummeted to the ground and detonated. Tragically, she couldn’t survive the fiery wreckage. She perished amidst the chaos, desperately attempting to free herself from the inferno but ultimately unable to do so.

7 Blockbuster (Mark Desmond)

Legends #3

DC: Suicide Squad Members Who Died On Missions

Mark Desmond, a chemist by trade, was the original “Blockbuster.” By discovering a groundbreaking formula that enhanced his physique, he aimed to equalize his formidable intellect. Regrettably, this elixir came with dire consequences, unleashing an uncontrollable temper and brutal behavior within him.

During the exciting crossover between Legends and Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller approached me with an offer I couldn’t refuse – joining her elite team to take down Brimstone, the fiery menace threatening Mount Rushmore. In the heat of the battle, Brimstone claimed another life: Blockbuster, who met his tragic end when the fire elemental seized and ignited him with a single, devastating fist strike.

6 The Thinker

The Suicide Squad (2021)

The passing of The Thinker was heart-wrenching; it resulted from his own invention. For decades, he carried out numerous tests on the colossal cosmic monster, Starro the Conqueror, which had been forcibly removed from its native home and confined in an unfriendly world.

As a gamer, I can tell you that Starro had a strong desire for retaliation. Once he managed to break free from the Jotunheim lab, his primary goal was to inflict pain on the one who had caused him suffering for so long. The Thinker became the unfortunate target of Starro’s wrath, and the outcome was nothing short of gruesome – his body was torn apart into gory fragments, leaving those watching in shock.

5 Psi

Doom Patrol & Suicide Squad Special #1

DC: Suicide Squad Members Who Died On Missions

Psi is a Supergirl villain who became a Suicide Squad member during the Doom Patrol & Suicide Squad Special one-shot. She is a psychic who possesses telepathic powers, from telekinesis to teleportation to telepathy.

During the rescue operation of Henry Wall (Hawk) from the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, Psi lent her assistance to the squad. By tapping into her psychic abilities, she uncovered that Doom Patrol was nearby, engaged in a similar mission. Regrettably, while trying to flee with their team during the ensuing chaos, Psi was hit by a rocket and ultimately succumbed to her injuries at the hands of a Red Rocket Brigade member.

4 Colonel Rick Flag

DC: Suicide Squad Members Who Died On Missions

In Jotunheim, during a fierce battle with Peacemaker, I, Colonel Rick Flag of Task Force X, met my unfortunate end. I had been determined to expose the dark secret behind the US government’s support for the Starro project at this remote location. My intentions were pure – to protect my people and country from the corruption that had set this monster free. Regrettably, events took a turn for the worse, and my valiant fight came to an end.

Instead of disclosing the issue, the Peacemaker chose to maintain secrecy as per Amanda Waller’s orders. However, a disagreement ensued between them, culminating in a fatal confrontation. The Peacemaker ended Flag’s life by plunging a shard of tile into his heart.

3 Mindboggler

Suicide Squad Vol.1 #2

DC: Suicide Squad Members Who Died On Missions

I used to dread encountering Leah Wasserman when she was an enemy of Firestorm. But then, shockingly, she joined the Suicide Squad. It was hard to believe that the very person who once filled me with fear would now be on our side. But the Assassination Bureau had other plans; they granted her mind-controlling abilities. Known as Mindboggler, she could manipulate anyone nearby, making them see things that terrified them deeply. It was a chilling power to behold, even from my own perspective.

During an operation in Qurac, Captain Boomerang provoked one team member, only to be humiliated when she turned the tables and confronted him with his deepest fears embodied by the rest of the squad. Later, while focusing on her mission, she was unexpectedly attacked from behind by Rustam, the Jihad leader, wielding a machine gun. Instead of saving her, Captain Boomerang chose to stand by as Rustam took her life in retaliation for the embarrassment he had suffered earlier.

2 Shrike

Suicide Squad Vol.1 #25

DC: Suicide Squad Members Who Died On Missions

Shrike, another name for Vanessa Kingsbury, obtained the abilities to control sounds and fly upon joining the Cadre, a band of miscreants infamous for confronting the Justice League of America.

Following his incarceration, Shrike joined the Suicide Squad for a task: rescuing a nun allegedly imprisoned for political reasons in the African country of Ogaden. Once the nun was safe, Shrike tried to evacuate her via flight, but was unfortunately brought down by the local military.

1 El Diablo

The Suicide Squad (2016)

DC: Suicide Squad Members Who Died On Missions

In the 2016 film “Suicide Squad,” El Diablo’s death stood out as particularly poignant for fans. During the climactic battle against the Enchantress and Incubus, he chose to give up his life. With a heavy heart, he unleashed all of his pyrokinetic abilities, something he had previously resisted due to fear and regret. His selfless act ultimately allowed his teammates to defeat their enemies.

During this act of self-sacrifice, El Diablo inadvertently triggers an immense explosion with his powers, which unfortunately takes his life but ultimately saves the team and averts a potential disaster for the world.
