Highlights
- Survival games offer tense experiences where one misstep can mean life or death for players.
- Some games allow players to disable combat entirely, focusing more on building and exploration.
- From stranded on a raft to surviving in a frozen wasteland, different games offer unique survival challenges.
As a seasoned survival gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from the friendly and forgiving worlds of Minecraft to the harsh, unforgiving landscapes of games like The Long Dark and Subnautica. But among these titles, there are some that truly stand out for their unique approaches to survival and peace.
Survival games captivate players by requiring them to oversee essential needs like health, thirst, and hunger, as well as managing various resources. Yet, some survival games can become monotonous due to an excess of enemy mobs incessantly appearing with the sole purpose of causing damage and destruction to players’ creations.
Survival game creators have acknowledged the dislike some gamers express towards combat and have introduced settings to eliminate it. In fact, several survival games now exist where confrontations don’t occur at all. Consequently, players who prefer constructing impressive bases or simply relishing the familiar survival mechanics in their preferred titles have a wealth of choices at their disposal!
8 Stranded Deep
Stranded On A Desert Island
In simple terms, Stranded Deep offers an engaging concept for a survival game. It drops players onto an island following a plane crash, leaving them with only their intelligence and determination to stay alive.
In the game “Stranded Deep,” survival elements are present that players are accustomed to, including managing thirst and purifying water. Unlike numerous other games, this title does not require players to engage in combat. Instead, combats settings can be disabled via the main menu. Although sharks and enemies exist within the game world, they will not attack or pose a threat to players.
7 Raft
Build And Survive On A Floating Home
In simpler terms, “Raft” places you and your team on a drifting craft in the open sea. Your objective is to stay alive and create a thriving habitat amidst vulnerability. Despite its initial harshness, this game can offer a snug and enjoyable experience when played with companions. You can even design elaborate and amusing living quarters!
As a fan of the game “Raft,” I can tell you that although there isn’t a major emphasis on combat, there is an exciting element added in the form of a relentless shark that trails your raft. At first glance, this may seem intimidating and potentially disruptive, but with some persistence, you can manage to keep it at bay. The presence of this shark adds a layer of realism and thrill to the gameplay experience, without taking away from the primary elements of exploration and base building that make “Raft” such an engaging adventure!
6 The Planet Crafter
Basic Survival In Space With Enthralling Terraforming
For supporters of “The Planet Crafter,” this game brings to mind “Subnautica,” but with a space setting and reduced tension. In contrast to “Subnautica,” “The Planet Crafter” does not involve combat, instead focusing on the objective of transforming an initially uninhabitable planet into a flourishing haven for humans.
In The Planet Crafter, the essential mechanics for survival, which include securing food, water, and oxygen, may be fundamental but are absolutely crucial. On the other hand, the base building and terraforming elements truly shine as the game’s primary attractions. The absence of combat in this space exploration adventure results in a remarkably peaceful and inviting experience focused on crafting and discovery.
5 Oxygen Not Included
Difficult Colony Management Survival
In simpler terms, “Oxygen Not Included” deviates from conventional survival game mechanics but retains some elements. This game tasks players with overseeing a community of less-than-intelligent clone inhabitants.
In “Oxygen Not Included,” there is a strong focus on overseeing management and construction tasks. Yet, it’s essential for players to attend to resources like oxygen, nourishment, and water as well. Contrary to popular belief, no hostile adversaries will invade the settlement. However, the game won’t be a stroll in the park!
4 Subnautica
Terrifying Alien Ocean Survival
As a passionate gamer, I’ve been deeply immersed in the captivating world of Subnautica. Since its debut, this sci-fi survival game has left an indelible mark on the gaming community, earning a spot among the greatest titles in its genre. In contrast to many other games, combat takes a backseat in Subnautica, and I’ve found that my best strategy is to steer clear of confrontations as much as possible.
In the game Subnautica, combats are generally something to steer clear of and aren’t a significant part of the gameplay mechanics. However, there are some truly petrifying creatures lurking in the depths, eager to give pursuit and bring nightmares to life. Interestingly enough, defeating these adversaries doesn’t yield any substantial rewards. Instead, it is more advantageous to evade them rather than engaging in direct confrontations.
3 Sons Of The Forest
Classic Survival With A Peaceful Mode
Sons Of The Forest, similar to its predecessor, is a common survival game focusing on base construction in the genre. While an intriguing narrative unfolds, most of your time will be dedicated to scavenging for resources and ensuring your survival. Building a strong shelter is essential to protect yourself from harsh conditions.
In “Sons of the Forest,” there are some ferocious cannibals and mutants present, but the game offers a tranquil setting as well. By activating the peaceful mode, all adversaries will be eliminated, enabling players to focus on undisturbed survival, exploration, and base construction. This setting eliminates the concerns of base damage or demise.
2 The Long Dark
Survive In A Frozen Wilderness
In simpler terms, “The Long Dark” is an extremely solitary survival game for fans of this genre. This game takes place in a post-apocalyptic landscape – a harsh, frozen wilderness where players must face the challenges of nature head-on.
In simpler terms, “The Long Dark” poses a significant challenge no matter how you approach it. Yet, there’s an option for easier gameplay where wild animals won’t attack first. Custom settings also exist to create a less hostile environment while maintaining a higher level of difficulty.
1 Green Hell
Realistic Rainforest Survival
Green Hell is an engaging and authentic survival game with great depth, offering a realistic experience. In the easier setting, players are spared the constant threat of unexpected attacks by adversaries or wildlife, unless they unintentionally encounter a rattlesnake.
In the game “Green Hell, survival is more complex than just dealing with hunger. Players need to monitor their intake of protein, carbs, fat, and water. Each item in their backpack must be carefully managed, including tools and food. The result is a challenging and engaging experience focused on survival and exploration. Even without combat in easy mode, the game maintains a high level of immersion and satisfaction.
