I’ve had the misfortune of encountering some truly despicable characters in my life, and none have left a deeper scar than these three from the Silent Hill series. Each one of them, Walter Sullivan, Dahlia Gillespie, and James Sunderland, have shown me just how far people can sink when driven by their own desires and beliefs.

In a realm shrouded by fog, inhabited by monstrous beings, and where individuals grapple with their deepest fears, selfless bravery could be a rare find as instincts for survival take precedence over all else. Alternatively, the town of Silent Hill may draw individuals who prioritize themselves above others, convinced they deserve retribution.

Multiple characters in the Silent Hill series can be seen as excessively self-centered, putting their own desires before anything else, even at the expense of others. While they may not necessarily be portrayed as villains themselves, this self-serving attitude is reminiscent of villainous behavior.

Spoilers ahead for the Silent Hill franchise, and Silent Hill 2 in particular.

Maria is among the most well-known characters in “Silent Hill 2,” yet her popularity doesn’t automatically make her a nice person. A mysterious figure resembling James’ deceased wife Mary, the authenticity of Maria’s existence is debated since she shares Mary’s appearance but exhibits a contrasting behavior and dress code, which is more seductive. As a significant companion throughout the game, players are tasked with safeguarding her. The way players interact with Maria can significantly impact the game’s ending.

During the course of the game, Maria’s demeanor and disposition fluctuate. At times, she behaves playfully towards James, while on other occasions, she exhibits temper tantrums, scolding James for not shielding her, as if he is solely responsible for her welfare and that of the entire town. This may symbolize how he treated his late wife, but regardless, Maria comes across as a self-absorbed figure who creates obstacles instead of offering assistance to James.

4 Leonard Wolf

In “Silent Hill 3,” the primary adversary is Claudia Wolf, an fanatical follower of the Order, who intends to utilize Heather as a means for reviving their deity. However, one significant reason behind Claudia’s unyielding devotion can be traced back to her oppressive father, Leonard Wolf.

He wanted nothing more than to raise a good, religious daughter in his own image, and was not afraid to dole out harsh judgment in order to be successful. Leonard would beat or threaten Claudia to iron out any behavior he deemed unfitting, as he was a truly selfish and cruel father. Thankfully, he got his just deserts at the hands of Heather.

3 Walter Sullivan

His Victims Were Nothing More than Means to an End in Silent Hill 4: The Room

Walter Sullivan is a intricately wicked character whose reasons extend beyond common cruelty and vile depravity. He is an adherent of the Order’s cult, having been nurtured by their teachings since childhood. Consequently, he deeply respected both the Order and its tenets, going to great lengths to rid humanity of its sins and attain Paradise. This aspiration drove him, as he fervently believed that in this realm, he would be reunited with his beloved mother amidst a world untainted by human wickedness and suffering.

Having experienced homelessness myself, I’ve seen the harsh realities of life that many choose to ignore. The lack of compassion and empathy from some people towards their fellow humans can be shocking and disheartening. But in the depths of my despair, I’ve come to a crossroads where I believe sacrifice is necessary to achieve my goals.

2 Dahlia Gillespie

Motherhood is linked to Godhood through quotes due to the unique joy of creation, but not all mothers embody this angelic image. This is particularly true for Dahlia Gillespie from “Silent Hill,” a major antagonist in the first game and one of the most self-centered characters within the franchise.

Dahlia was fanatically devoted to her cult and believed that sacrificing her daughter Alessa was essential to revive their god. This came after years of inflicting harm upon Alessa. The chilling factor about Dahlia’s wickedness is not derived from physical power or supernatural abilities, but rather the profound extent of her self-centeredness and depravity. It takes an extraordinary level of evil to take a child’s life in pursuit of personal goals.

1 James Sunderland (Silent Hill 2)

Killed His Sick Wife Just to Be Free in Silent Hill 2

James Sunderland, a grieving widower, makes a visit to the tranquil town of Silent Hill 2 three years after his wife’s supposed death from a terminal illness. The unexpected arrival of a letter from his late spouse rekindles his desire to return to their shared memories and find closure. However, as James delves deeper into the enigmatic town, he encounters various terrifying creatures. Yet, nothing compares to the shocking truth that unfolds at the game’s end.

At the Lakeside Hotel, James stumbled upon a videotape that revealed a hidden truth he had kept buried for decades: Mary didn’t die from her illness, but rather, James took her life with his own hands, overwhelmed by the thought of caring for a sick wife any longer. Doctors had predicted that Mary would soon be well enough to go home, but James refused, leading him to make the fateful decision to end her suffering, and in turn, his own. While some may argue that he acted out of compassion, it was equally a means for James to free himself from the burden of caring for a wife he had grown to despise.
