As a PlayStation fan, I love PlayStation Plus because it’s always got a great selection of games. It’s awesome knowing that when I’m done with one game, there’s usually something else on there that catches my eye and keeps me playing. It’s like there’s always a new adventure waiting!
Red Dead Redemption 2 has captivated many players, and it’s easy to see why. Beyond its compelling story and stunning graphics, the game offers a richly detailed world that’s a pleasure to explore, packed with tons of things to do.
Eventually, you’ll finish the game and want to find something else to play that’s just as good. It’s tough to find a replacement for such a great experience, but I think I can help you find one!
If you’re a Red Dead Redemption 2 fan looking for something new to play on PS Plus, here are some games I think you’ll really enjoy. They aren’t all Westerns, but they offer similar experiences that should appeal to you.
10. Cyberpunk 2077
Swap Strawberry For Night City
It might seem strange to compare these two games, since Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person RPG set in a futuristic, cyberpunk world. However, despite the different settings, it shares many similarities with Red Dead Redemption 2, though it might take some getting used to.
The game features a vast, open world you can explore freely, with very few restrictions. Instead of horses, you’ll get around in vehicles, and you’re welcome to create as much mayhem as you want in the city.
The game features a compelling, movie-like main story with a protagonist who starts out in a desperate situation, and plenty of optional content to explore along the way.
Cyberpunk’s combat is definitely more complex, and it requires understanding more detailed RPG mechanics. However, if you’re hoping for a deeply immersive world like Red Dead Redemption 2, but set in a futuristic, gritty city, Night City is a great option.
9. Desperados 3
Shootin’ in the Shadows

We generally focused on games outside the western genre, but we couldn’t resist including at least one option for fans who enjoy those types of games.
Desperados 3 shares similarities with Red Dead Redemption in its overall feel. You command a group of outlaws, using strategy and sharpshooting to quickly complete levels and collect valuable items.
The gameplay is very different from Red Dead Redemption’s action-focused style. This game is a top-down stealth strategy game, similar to Shadow Tactics, so careful planning is essential. Rushing in with guns blazing will quickly lead to failure – and a bullet to the head.
While the story isn’t particularly memorable, the game’s deep gameplay and realistic world more than compensate. If you enjoyed the strategic elements of controlling Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2 and are looking for something similar, Desperados 3 might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.
8. West of Dead
Wyoming Is Purgatory… Who Knew?

If you’re looking for cowboy games that aren’t quite like Red Dead Redemption, check out West of Dead. It’s a unique twin-stick shooter with Roguelike elements where you play as an undead gunslinger stuck in purgatory, with plenty of time and bullets to spare.
As a big fan of Red Dead Redemption, I immediately felt comfortable with this game – it nails that western, cover-shooter vibe. But it’s not just a copy! The creepy, occult setting and the fact that it’s a Roguelike – meaning you’re always trying to improve and upgrade your weapons with each playthrough – make it feel totally new and exciting. It’s a really cool twist on the genre.
Honestly, playing West of Dead feels less like a serious, realistic western and more like a fast-paced, arcade-style shooter. If you’re looking for constant action and just want to blast everything in sight, it’s a good time. Plus, Ron Perlman, the voice of Hellboy, does the voiceover work, and he’s awesome, so that’s a big plus!
7. Watch Dogs 2
The Forgotten Middle Child

The Watchdogs series hasn’t always received the recognition it could have. This is likely due to a combination of factors: the hype surrounding the initial game’s announcement, weak storylines in many of the games, and the fact that the core gameplay – focused on hacking – doesn’t appeal to all players.
Although the first Watch Dogs and Legion didn’t achieve massive commercial success, I think Watch Dogs 2 is unfairly criticized. It’s a surprisingly good game and, in my opinion, the strongest entry in the series.
While the setting is very different from the old west of Red Dead Redemption, I’m including this game for similar reasons to the Grand Theft Auto series. It shares that same open-world, free-roaming style that RDR fans will enjoy. Plus, being able to mess with everything using today’s technology adds an extra layer of fun that wasn’t possible back in the cowboy days.
6. Jak 2: Renegade
Jak Is Back, And Broodier Than Ever

If you’re a fan of classic games like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption, you might appreciate this find. The PlayStation Plus Catalog doesn’t have many games like those, so we had to look further back. What we discovered is a fantastic game that takes the open-world style of Rockstar games and combines it with the fun of a classic platformer.
The popular Jak and Daxter games took a darker turn in their second installment, swapping humor for a more serious and intense experience. Players raced through a desolate, futuristic city on foot and in hovercraft, all while seeking revenge against those who transformed Jak with a dangerous substance.
While it shares a similar open-world style with games like Grand Theft Auto, this title is otherwise quite different from Red Dead Redemption. However, with its story of revenge, brooding main character, and action-packed gunfights, it’s definitely worth a look for fans of the Western genre.
5. Thehunter: Call of the Wild
Nature Calls

Although the main story and interesting characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 were great, many players actually preferred to ignore the missions and just explore the world and hunt animals.
Red Dead Redemption 2 offers incredibly fun and detailed hunting, but dedicated hunting games existed long before it, focusing solely on the experience of tracking and taking down animals.
Hunter: Call of the Wild is a standout title on the PS Plus Catalog, offering a detailed and satisfying hunting experience where you can carefully track animals, plan your approach, and enjoy the rewarding feeling of a successful hunt.
Honestly, exploring this game is just beautiful. It’s a lot like wandering around in Red Dead Redemption 2 – the world itself is a joy to be in. So, I’m grabbing my camo and rifle because it’s time to answer the call of the wild and get hunting!
4. Days Gone
Replace The Old West With The Midwest

If you loved the zombie-filled chaos of Undead Nightmare in Red Dead Redemption, or if you just enjoy playing as a tough, outdoorsy character, then Days Gone might be exactly the game you’re looking for. I think you’d really get into it!
While Days Gone doesn’t tell its story as powerfully as Red Dead Redemption, it offers comparable shooting mechanics, a large open world to roam freely, and plenty of things to do and discover.
What truly makes Days Gone special is its zombie combat. It delivers some of the most exciting third-person, open-world fighting you’ll find, especially with its massive hordes. If you strategize carefully, you can actually overcome these overwhelming groups of undead and clear out an infestation.
This game focuses more on basic survival than Arthur Morgan’s story, but it offers a similar kind of satisfying experience. You should definitely check it out.
3. Grand Theft Auto III: The Definitive Edition
The Catalyst of it All

If you enjoy games similar to Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto is often suggested. While newer GTA titles like GTA V are a better fit, currently only Grand Theft Auto 3 is available through the PS Plus subscription.
This updated version definitely improves the original PS2 game, bringing it closer to modern expectations. However, it feels more like an early experiment than a fully polished title, especially when compared to later games in the series. Still, it was a groundbreaking game that really started the trend of open-world sandbox adventures.
You can still create chaos, attract police attention, and roam around Liberty City. However, the game also features a strong storyline that lets you learn more about Claude, a GTA hero who doesn’t get much recognition.
Put simply, Red Dead Redemption wouldn’t exist without Grand Theft Auto 3, making it a game worth playing while it’s available.
2. The Last of Us: Part Two
It All Catches Up To You In The End

Red Dead Redemption 2 is best known for its incredibly powerful story and stunningly beautiful world. Because of this, I think it shares a lot of similarities with The Last of Us – both games excel at immersive storytelling and detailed world design.
While both are comparable, I’d argue the often-criticized but truly excellent Part Two is more alike to Red Dead Redemption 2. This is largely because, like RDR2, it features a new protagonist who feels familiar, and explores themes of loss, conflict, and the consequences of your choices.
As a gamer, I didn’t find the gameplay in The Last of Us too difficult to pick up. It’s a pretty standard third-person shooter with a focus on stealth, which I’m used to. The biggest thing is managing resources to survive, but honestly, if you’ve played Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll be totally fine with that aspect of it.
Both of these games deliver stories that feel like watching a movie. If you enjoyed the compelling narrative of Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us is an excellent choice for a similar experience.
1. Ghost of Tsushima
Honor Above All Else

PlayStation has a lot of great games you can’t find anywhere else, and they all tell compelling stories. If you could only pick one, though, I highly recommend Ghost of Tsushima, especially if you enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2.
Few PS4 games can match the stunning visuals of Red Dead Redemption 2, but this one is a strong contender. Beyond its beautiful graphics, the game boasts a captivating story, tons of content, and a huge open world perfect for exploring on horseback – similar to the experience in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Both games share similar themes – exploring complex morality, the value of honor, and the consequences of seeking revenge. This results in compelling, well-paced narratives that fans of either game are sure to enjoy.
You’ll need to train like a samurai, honing your combat skills to match the sharpness of your weapon. With dedication and practice, you’ll eventually become as proficient with a sword as Arthur is with a gun.
