Bungie is holding another playtest for its upcoming game, *Marathon*, from October 22nd to 28th. This will allow them to test the changes made since the initial alpha version. *Marathon* has generated a lot of discussion and some controversy, even though it isn’t out yet. This new playtest suggests Bungie is still actively working on and believes in the potential of this extraction shooter.
A major controversy hit the game *Marathon* in May 2025 when accusations of plagiarism surfaced, alleging that its art style heavily copied the work of an independent artist. This, along with ongoing management problems and negative fan reactions, likely led to the resignation of Bungie’s CEO, Pete Parsons, and Sony’s decision to bring the developer under the PlayStation Studios umbrella. Despite these challenges, work on *Marathon* is still moving forward, and a playtest for an updated version is planned.
Marathon to Run a New Closed Playtest on October 22
Bungie has announced another closed technical test for their upcoming game, *Marathon*. This test will follow recent updates with new content and features. It will run from October 22nd to 28th and is open to players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in North America and Europe. PC players on Steam can apply starting October 13th. Like previous tests, participants will need to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to keep details about the game private.
Marathon Closed Technical Test Details
- Playtest Dates: October 22 to October 28
- Application Dates: Open now for console users on Marathon’s official website. Steam applications open from October 13–26

Okay, so as a big fan of this game that’s been stuck in development, I’m really hyped about the upcoming playtest! Bungie’s finally giving us a chance to check out all the changes they’ve been making. They said we’ll be able to try out three maps, different character models (they call them ‘runner shells’ – five of those!), and even proximity chat, which is awesome. They’ve also tweaked the combat to feel better and added a solo queue option, which I’ve been wanting! Plus, they’re promising more story details woven into the environments. Remember all the drama a while back? Well, leaks suggested they really listened to the feedback and made big improvements, and from what I’ve seen, the game looks *way* better now. I can’t wait to jump in and see for myself!

After Bungie didn’t show anything at September’s PlayStation event, fans are eagerly awaiting a playtest to see if the game is heading in a positive direction. It’s unclear whether the updated *Marathon* will regain the support of its community and reassure players who have been largely disappointed. While gameplay footage is unlikely due to a non-disclosure agreement, the developers have said they’ll share more information about the recent improvements to *Marathon* following the closed test.
