Many game franchises depend on well-known characters to carry their stories. While *Mario* has seen numerous spin-off titles, he’s consistently remained the main character. Other series, however, function more like collections of stories, frequently switching to a new protagonist with each game or after a few installments. *Final Fantasy* and *Silent Hill* are excellent examples of this approach.
A noticeable trend in 2025 is the release of game sequels featuring female characters taking the lead roles previously held by men. While this doesn’t guarantee more games will follow suit, it’s an interesting development. Let’s explore some of the best examples of these game sequels where women have replaced the male protagonists.
Ghost Of Yotei
A Vengeful Spirit

Released in 2025, *Ghost of Yotei* is a new game that builds on the world of *Ghost of Tsushima*. Players take on the role of Atsu, a character motivated by revenge, though her story and time period are distinct from Jin’s. Atsu seeks peace by defeating the Yotei 6, but this comes at a great personal cost. The game offers a vast and beautiful open world where players can ride across diverse landscapes and engage in combat with numerous enemies, delivering a compelling samurai experience.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Nail In The Coffin

Hornet started as a foe in the original *Hollow Knight*, but now she’s the main character in *Hollow Knight: Silksong*. Fans often discuss whether Hornet has a specific gender, though the game consistently uses female pronouns for her. The developers, Team Cherry, intentionally leave details open to interpretation, which is a nice touch. Regardless, Hornet is a significant improvement over The Knight: she can speak, moves much faster, and is noticeably more powerful, fitting for a character facing a challenging solo adventure.
Hades 2
Death To Chronos
Hades 2 is a brand new game from the creators of Hades, and it’s the first time they’ve ever made a direct sequel. This time, you play as Melinoe, Zagreus’ sister, and her goal is to defeat Chronos, who has tormented her family.
Melinoe battles both in the Underworld and on the surface, facing challenges set by the Olympian gods. This is a significant change for the game, but it still retains its compelling story and engaging roguelike gameplay. Each time Melinoe falls in battle, her story expands, making every playthrough meaningful.
The Last Of Us Part 2
Joel Takes A Back Seat
Picking up several years after the first game, *The Last of Us Part 2* finds Ellie and Joel settled in Jackson, Wyoming. This time, players primarily control Ellie, who has matured into a skilled hunter. While Joel still appears, Ellie largely navigates the dangerous, post-apocalyptic world – filled with both humans and Clickers – on her own. The sequel is even more intense and emotionally devastating than the original, delivering shocking and disturbing moments that many fans didn’t anticipate.
SteamWorld Dig 2
Looking For Rusty

So, I jumped back into the SteamWorld universe with *SteamWorld Dig 2*, and it’s awesome! This time around, I’m playing as Dorothy, a new robot who’s trying to find Rusty – he’s disappeared! The digging and collecting are pretty much the same as the first game, which I loved. But this one feels a lot more like a Metroidvania – Dorothy unlocks different abilities that let me explore these really cool, but dangerous, underground areas as I search for Rusty. It’s a really fun way to progress and discover new stuff!
Spelunky 2
Where’s My Dad?

Spelunky 2 is similar to Steamworld Dig 2, focusing on a rescue mission. The story follows Ana, daughter of the original game’s hero, who is searching for her parents after they disappear while exploring the moon.
Okay, so I’m playing as Ana, and she’s gone into this crazy dungeon *on the moon* to find her parents. This game is seriously tough – it’s a roguelike, which means every time I mess up, I start all over. Basically, I have to get really good with Ana’s abilities, like mastering her whip to deal with snakes and learning to dodge all these deadly traps, if I want to help her achieve her goal and find her family. It’s all about getting better with each run, even though progress resets every time!
Axiom Verge 2
An Alternate Reality
Axiom Verge 2 isn’t a direct sequel to the first game, though details are limited. This new installment features a renowned scientist named Indra who finds herself in a different universe. While the original focused on gunplay, this game emphasizes using Indra’s boomerang in combat, alongside other weapons and abilities. Compared to the first game’s tighter environments, Axiom Verge 2 offers a more expansive, open-world Metroidvania experience with large, diverse areas to explore.
Alan Wake 2
The FBI Enters

Alan Wake 2 follows two main characters: Alan Wake, the protagonist of the first game, and Saga, an FBI agent. Though players control both, the game focuses more on Saga’s story and her connection to the overall mystery. Her sections are particularly captivating, letting players delve into her thought process to solve puzzles and investigate cases. The real-world environments Saga explores are also more compelling than the surreal, book-based world Alan inhabits. Ultimately, this installment centers around Saga, and it will be fascinating to see how the story evolves in a potential third game.
