One of the directors of *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* knows players are debating the new Streamlined Progression feature, and has explained the reasoning behind adding it. They also shared some thoughts on whether this feature might appear in future *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* games, which could ease concerns for fans.
Originally released in 2020, with an expanded version called *FF7 Intergrade* in 2021, *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* is coming to Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 in January 2026. The launch will include a new feature called Streamlined Progression, which lets players use simple cheats to easily overcome combat challenges. Five cheats have been announced: always-full health, magic points, Limit Gauge, ATB gauge, and dealing 9999 damage with every attack. Players can turn each cheat on or off as they like, giving them full control. However, not everyone is happy about this addition.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Co-Director Talks Streamlined Progression
In an interview with Automaton, *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* co-director Naoki Hamaguchi admitted he knew the Streamlined Progression feature wouldn’t please all players, but he still advocated for its inclusion. He explained that with the game being released on new platforms, he wanted to make it easier for new players to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Hamaguchi also shared that he often finds it difficult to keep up with the constant stream of new, high-quality games, and sometimes wishes he could use debug functions in other titles to experience more content. This personal frustration inspired the idea for Streamlined Progression.
The developers considered how existing fans would react before adding Streamlined Progression. Hamaguchi explained that launching a major game with this feature could cause issues, such as spoilers being shared online. Because *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* came out in 2020, they felt comfortable adding it to this new game. Following that same reasoning, it’s unlikely the final game in the trilogy will have Streamlined Progression at launch, and it might be too soon to include it in *Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth* as well.
Streamlined Progression lets players customize their experience. Returning players or those who don’t want to repeat tough challenges from *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* can easily adjust the game’s difficulty options. While some fans aren’t thrilled with this system, it’s optional, so players can choose whether or not to use it.
