Say Goodbye to These Items in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Pokemon games are known for keeping certain elements consistent from release to release, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A is already shaking things up. It features a completely new battle system that moves away from traditional turn-based combat. Interestingly, it’s the first core Pokemon game that isn’t a remake to not introduce any new Pokemon species or regional variations. Battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A happen in real-time, with a Pokemon’s Speed affecting how often it can dodge attacks and how quickly its moves are ready to use. While this change is exciting for many, it also means the removal of at least seven beloved items, which might disappoint longtime players.

A key element of battles in Pokémon games has always been carefully choosing which moves to use, and making sure your Pokémon know the right ones to win. While *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* will still let you choose four moves per Pokémon, it seems likely that items used to restore a move’s uses (PP) will be removed from the game. Here’s what’s expected to change:

  • PP Up (increases a move’s PP by 20%, usable up to three times)
  • PP Max (increases a move’s PP by 60%)
  • Ether (restores 10 PP for a single move)
  • Max Ether (restores a single move’s PP in full)
  • Elixir (restores 10 PP for all moves)
  • Max Elixir (restores every move to max PP)
  • Leppa Berry (restores 10 PP for a single move automatically when a move runs out of PP)

While it hasn’t been officially announced, it seems highly probable that ‘PP’ items won’t appear in ‘PLZA’. This is based on what we’ve seen in the game’s interface, information from leaks and previews, and how these items have functioned in the past.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A is Cutting PP Items

Because moves in the game will recharge over time after use, items that restore PP aren’t needed – and haven’t appeared in any gameplay footage. With *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* removing abilities and linking cooldown speed to a Pokemon’s Speed stat, an item to increase PP would be completely useless.

Since PP is no longer a factor, items like Leppa Berries, Elixirs, and Ethers probably won’t return. However, they *could* be repurposed to quickly recharge a move during battle. This feels overly complicated, though. It would be cleaner to simply remove items related to PP from the game. There could still be ways to instantly refill a move’s recharge bar, but they’d likely be called something else, or might not exist at all.

Why PP Items Have No Place in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

With so much already happening in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* – like the new Mega Evolutions, managing their Mega gauge during battles, dodging attacks, and aiming your own – adding PP items or mechanics just isn’t feasible. It would create too much extra to manage alongside existing items and consumables during combat.

5 Out of 7 Cut Items in Pokemon Legends: Z-A Are From Gen 1

As a long-time Pokémon fan, it’s amazing to me how many of the items that boost your moves’ PP have been around since the very beginning – way back in the original *Red and Blue*! The only exceptions are PP Max and Leppa Berry, which weren’t added until the Gen 3 games. Everything else has been consistently available in every Pokémon game since then, all the way up to *Scarlet and Violet*. What makes these items so special is that you usually can’t just buy them in shops. You have to find them randomly or get them from specific spots and characters, which makes them feel even more valuable when you do!

Pokémon Legends: Arceus streamlined item usage, removing many items and simplifying PP recovery. Instead of finding PP-boosting items commonly, players could craft Leppa Berries, Max Ethers, and Max Elixirs using resources gathered in the game.

Honestly, it’s a bit of a bummer to hear that some familiar features seem to be missing from the new *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* game. But when I think about everything new they’re adding, it actually starts to make sense. It might even mean that picking the right four moves for your Pokemon will be *super* important, because we’ll probably be switching them up a lot more often during battles!
