Embark Studios has announced that ARC Raiders won’t allow players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S to team up or compete with those on PC. This is disappointing for console players, who often prefer to play against others using controllers to avoid disadvantages against keyboard and mouse users, and to minimize encounters with cheaters, which are more common on PC.
Originally unveiled at The Game Awards in 2021 as a free-to-play cooperative shooter, *ARC Raiders* has evolved into a player-versus-player-versus-environment extraction shooter. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where most of humanity lives underground, players take on the role of raiders, scavenging for resources and fighting to survive on the dangerous surface. *ARC Raiders* is scheduled to launch on October 30th for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
ARC Raiders Will Not Have Console-Only Crossplay
Recent news in the ARC Raiders Discord isn’t ideal for console players. Embark Studios has confirmed the game will support full crossplay across all platforms, with the ability to enable or disable it. However, PlayStation 5 and Xbox players won’t be able to limit crossplay to just consoles, which might frustrate some. Given that other games in this genre, like Escape from Tarkov, have struggled with cheaters, some players are understandably worried about this.
The lead-up to the release of *ARC Raiders* has been a bit rocky. Embark Studios started a countdown timer online in June that many fans mistakenly thought meant the game would be unexpectedly released. After the confusion, Embark Studios apologized for getting players’ hopes up and explained the countdown was just meant to generate excitement and be a fun tease.
Players eager to experience ARC Raiders will have a chance to participate in a final playtest, called the Server Slam, from October 17th to 19th. Although the developers at Embark Studios had initially stated there would be no further playtests, they’ve decided to hold this one to test the game’s servers. The Server Slam will be open to everyone on all platforms globally, and it’s a great opportunity for potential players to try the game and help ensure a smooth launch by pushing the servers to their limits.
