Ghost of Yotei feels like a strong continuation of Ghost of Tsushima, building on what made the first game great. Improvements have been made across the board, like faster loading and better ways to get around. Plus, the new hero, Atsu, has more combat options than just a katana.
Ghost of Yotei offers a wider range of close-combat weapons than the original Ghost of Tsushima. While not every weapon is equally enjoyable, the ones listed below are definitely worth using. The game’s photo mode lets you capture impressive, stylish combat moments. To succeed in Ghost of Yotei and fully enjoy the fighting, players should become skilled with these weapons.
The Wolf Blade
A Familial Katana
At the start of *Ghost of Yotei*, players will have the powerful Wolf Blade, a unique katana. It works much like Jin’s swords from the first game, easily slicing through both enemies and obstacles like bamboo. This sword is particularly effective against opponents who also use katanas, allowing players to either deflect attacks or overwhelm them with quick strikes.
One of the most interesting parts of *Ghost of Yotei* is the way you can use the katana in standoffs, similar to a Western duel. While it might not be the most visually impressive weapon, the katana is reliable and effective, making it a great choice to use throughout the game, especially for a skilled player like Atsu.
Odachi
Slow And Steady Lops The Arm Off
The Odachi is a larger, heavier version of the katana, and the game accurately shows how difficult it is to handle. Atsu needs to adjust the scabbard to draw it, and it’s so heavy she has to use both hands and keep it low to the ground. Even if you fully upgrade her skills in *Ghost of Yotei*, the Odachi will still be a slow weapon to swing.
Despite being a bit unwieldy, the Odachi sword is incredibly satisfying to use. The first time you slice through a tough enemy, you’ll feel a powerful surge of excitement, and it’s a weapon well worth mastering.
Kusarigama
Whip It Good
Later in the game, the Kusarigama can become incredibly powerful if you fully upgrade its blade and skills, making it one of the best weapons available. Finding it is a challenge – it’s hidden deep within Owl Mountain in the Ghost of Yotei area – but it’s worth the effort. A fully upgraded Kusarigama can easily defeat enemies with shields, and the weight on the chain can quickly knock out most opponents.
Become a master of this weapon and take down enemies quickly, just like a character from the *Castlevania* series. The only downside is that it takes a while to unlock. If a sequel to *Ghost* is ever made, it would be great if the hero started the game with this weapon.
Yari
Pole-Vaulting
Okay, so the Yari is this Japanese spear, and it’s not about big, flashy swings. It’s more about precision – think poking someone with a really sharp needle. I’ve found it’s *super* effective against players using the Kusarigama, because you can mess up their chain attacks. It’s decent for just stabbing, but honestly, the coolest part is that it lets Atsu jump and launch off the ground – it’s a game changer for movement!
Players can launch Atsu into the air with a charged Strong Attack (Triangle button), allowing her to deliver a powerful kick that stuns enemies. This move feels so versatile, it makes many players hope Sucker Punch might create a martial arts game with this type of combat instead of focusing only on swords.
Kunai
Flick And Swish
In *Ghost of Yotei*, kunai are throwing weapons players can obtain. Pressing the R1 button lets you quickly throw one or two at enemies to momentarily distract them. While you can’t aim for headshots with kunai, they’re useful for creating a brief opening to follow up with a stronger melee attack.
Atsu isn’t a master of stealth or ninja weapons, but she manages with what she knows. The Tanzutsu pistol is a neat, fast-firing weapon, but you don’t get it until so late in the game that the kunai ends up being more useful.
Scorch Bomb
Just. Plain. Fun.
Scorch Bombs are likely to be the most popular and satisfying weapon in the game. While ammo is limited – a good choice for balance – these bombs are the most powerful option in *Ghost of Yotei*. Players can upgrade them to increase their explosive range. During the first mission, you’ll get a chance to use an unlimited supply of Scorch Bombs against a group of ronin in a valley.
This mission is a standout experience in the game, largely due to its intense and unpredictable action. While the Scorch Bombs might be a bit too strong, they showcase Sucker Punch’s ability to create genuinely enjoyable, even if wild, gameplay.
Oni’s Flame
Flame On!
The Oni’s Flame isn’t really a weapon – it’s a coating you apply to weapons. However, the game lists it as one. When applied to a melee weapon, it covers it in flames, increasing its damage for a short period.
The Kusarigama is arguably the most impressive weapon to activate, creating a swirling tornado of fire around Atsu. However, like all weapons in the game, the Oni’s Flame should be used with caution. It can ignite the environment, including the grass, and players might even get burned, so careful handling is key.
Enemy Weapons
Oops, You Dropped Something
Okay, so here’s a cool thing I discovered in this game: some of the most effective attacks don’t even involve *my* weapons! You can disarm enemies – either with a special skill or just by beating them up – and then pick up whatever they drop. Seriously, anything from a little sickle to a massive sword. And the best part? You can throw those dropped weapons *back* at them! It’s a super satisfying way to turn their own gear against them.
You can also improve Atsu’s throwing skills, making each weapon throw more powerful. There’s a lot of satisfaction in throwing a spear at enemies from a distance, and players can even capture the perfect shot using the game’s photo mode in *Ghost of Yotei*.
