Hyper Light Breaker Developers Ending Development And Laying Off Staff

The team behind Hyper Light Breaker has stopped working on the game and is reducing its staff with layoffs.

Game Developer initially reported that Heart Machine is finishing up work on the game. While the company confirmed the end of development, they haven’t said how many employees will be affected.

Heart Machine announced they’ve unfortunately had to let go of some team members while finishing up Hyper Light Breaker. A spokesperson explained this wasn’t their preferred outcome, but was necessary due to the current situation.

Okay, so this project is wrapping up, but it’s not just about us finishing it. Honestly, things outside our control really played a part – funding got tricky, the big companies are changing how they do things, and it’s just tough being a small indie studio these days. It’s a complicated situation, and we’re just trying to navigate it the best we can.

Regarding the project’s future, the studio has announced plans for something in January. They aim to deliver an update that is both substantial and fully refined.

We’re working hard to polish the game, finish the most important features, and deliver a strong final experience, they explained. Because our team is getting smaller, we won’t be releasing any further updates or doing any live question-and-answer sessions for the remainder of the year. We want the team to be able to concentrate all their efforts on making this next version the best it can be.

Hyper Light Breaker, a game that serves as a backstory to the popular 2016 title Hyper Light Drifter, became available in early access in January 2025. Initial reactions from players and critics were somewhat divided.
