Breaking into the genre of platform fighters can be quite challenging, with Super Smash Bros. holding the crown as the most-loved among them. However, other competitors have occasionally entered the fray. Games like Brawlhalla, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, and even PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale have seen different degrees of success throughout their existence, but none have traversed the same rollercoaster ride as MultiVerus. From its highly popular beta phase to its moderately successful reintroduction, and finally to its retirement in May this year, not many games have witnessed such drastic highs and lows within a short span of time.
Even though MultiVersus might not be a long-lasting game, it offers valuable insights we can glean from its brief run. During its testing phase, fans admired the game’s impressive character designs, intriguing roster choices, and fast-paced gameplay. However, there’s one standout feature that should persist beyond the shutdown of its servers in May – a feature that MultiVersus introduced which, ideally, won’t disappear with the game itself.
MultiVersus’ Premier 2v2 Mode Deserves Another Shot in Another Platform Fighter
MultiVersus’ 2v2 Game Mode Deserves a Second Chance
In the arena of platform fighters like MultiVersus, gameplay modes such as Free-For-All and 1v1 are common, but what sets this game apart is its distinctive 2v2 format. As the name implies, two teams consisting of two players each engage in intense battles on the stage until one team’s characters have been knocked out. Despite its apparent simplicity, the 2v2 mode offers a wealth of strategic depth that continues to captivate players, even if MultiVersus itself may not persist.
In the 2v2 mode of MultiVersus, players were advised to carefully choose characters that work effectively together. Characters with soft defenses and long-range abilities, such as Marvin the Martian, often formed a great team with sturdy frontline fighters like Superman or Jason Vorhees, who lacked their own ranged attacks. By selecting characters that counterbalance each other’s weaknesses, teams gained an edge over those that randomly queued up.
Because the game was designed based on the 2v2 format, many of its strategies involved having a partner to collaborate with. For instance, Beetlejuice, one of the more unusual characters in MultiVersus, has a passive ability that lets him instantly teleport to an opponent marked by his teammate; a clever reference to how the character is summoned in the films. Additionally, Stripe could launch sawblade projectiles that not only hit teammates but also surrounded them like a protective shield, inflicting damage on any enemies they encountered during combat.
Why 2v2 Needs to Find its Footing in Another Platform Fighter
MultiVersus has been discontinued. The game can no longer be downloaded, the servers will be turned off at the end of May, and the studio responsible for its development, Player First Games, has been closed by WB Games. However, the 2v2 game mode seems to have potential and deserves another chance to find a place within the platform fighter genre. This mode has demonstrated its worth through MultiVersus, it just needs a stronger game to be associated with to truly succeed in the long term.
In essence, while “Smash Bros” dominates as an all-out party game within its genre, “MultiVersus” distinguishes itself by focusing initially on team-based 2v2 combat with a competitive balance. This aspect sets it apart from other platform fighters, potentially making it a lucrative niche for any developer who avoids the pitfalls “MultiVersus” may have encountered over time. In other words, “MultiVersus” emphasizes teamwork in its design, which is currently not a focus for many other platform fighters.
