A new Age of Empires game is currently being made, and it appears the developers are switching to Unreal Engine. This means they’re moving away from the custom Essence and Bang Engines that powered Age of Empires 4 and Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition.
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios is actively developing the next installment in the Age of Empires series, continuing the franchise’s long history. World’s Edge, the team responsible for Age of Empires 4 and the recent updated versions of Age of Empires 2 and 3, is currently hiring for two roles that require experience with Unreal Engine, suggesting the next game will be built using that technology.
Both the Pricing Unreal Engineer and Senior Unreal Engineer positions need candidates with a strong understanding of all areas of Unreal Engine game development, as well as experience managing external teams or individuals.
We don’t know exactly what’s next for Age of Empires, but it looks like the developers have a clear plan for the technology they’ll be using going forward.
