- ZeniMax Media trademark suggests the Starfield expansion is named Starborn, adding to franchise lore.
- Despite mixed reception, Starfield shatters records with 10 million peak players.
- Second expansion may delve into mysterious Creators and Starborn faction, expanding the lore.
As a long-time Bethesda gamer and space exploration enthusiast, I’m thrilled to hear that the Starfield universe is expanding with not one but two expansions! The first expansion, Shattered Space, already broke records for Bethesda with 10 million peak players, despite some mixed reception. But as someone who’s spent countless hours exploring the lore of Skyrim and Fallout, I know that Bethesda has a knack for creating immersive worlds, and Starfield is no exception.
A recently registered trademark filed by ZeniMax Media implies that Starfield will follow up Shattered Space with an expansion bearing the name Starborn. Though the team at Bethesda has shied away from revealing any details about Shattered Space beyond its trailer, Todd Howard has assured fans that Starfield would receive more than just one expansion as part of its post-launch support. Despite having a mixed reception at launch, Starfield shattered Bethesda’s records and, according to the publisher, had 10 million players during its peak, either playing via the Xbox Game Pass or through a purchased copy.
Despite the criticism, Starfield, produced by Bethesda, is their game with the lowest rating on Steam, boasting an average user score of 59%. Though it aimed to replicate the open-ended allure of Bethesda’s previous works, its procedurally generated content and uninspiring environment drew frequent complaints. With a team of over 250 people still dedicated to Starfield, substantial investments were made in rectifying major issues, like the absence of a city map or official modding capabilities. These enhancements have been positively received by fans, but it’s Shattered Space that will ultimately determine Starfield’s standing among other games built with the Creation Engine.
Although Shattered Space from Bethesda brings a substantial new element to the table, it’s not their only exploration of revamping the game. While Shattered Space introduces House Va’ruun and alienates the Settled Systems with its unique environment, a recent trademark hints at Bethesda’s plans for a second Starfield expansion. The revelation about this trademark was posted on Twitter by Timur222, and although it doesn’t guarantee that the second expansion will be called Starborn, the connection to the Starfield franchise leaves us with a clear inference.
The Second Starfield Expansion Could Be Named Starborn
In addition to House Va’ruun and its Great Serpent, there is a significant enigma yet to be unraveled within the Settled Systems. Although the Starborn serve as the main adversaries in the game, the Creators behind The Unity in Starfield are an intriguing faction shrouded in mystery. With scant information available, even the Starborn themselves question the origins of this enigmatic group. Their identity – extinct ancient beings or still-existing cosmic entities – is a riddle waiting to be solved, and a potential focus for a future expansion of Starfield.
In its infancy as a new franchise, Starfield holds great promise and its rich backstory can develop in various ways. Beyond the established Settled Systems lies a vast galaxy waiting to be explored further through downloadable content (DLCs). Hints from Todd Howard suggest Bethesda plans for annual expansions for Starfield, but an exact release date for the second expansion, titled Shattered Space, is predicted to be Fall 2024.
