  • E-Day on the PS5 could revitalize Gears Esports, introduce crossplay, and potentially pave the way for other Gears games on PlayStation.

As a long-time fan of the Gears of War series, I am thrilled at the prospect of the next installment, E-Day, potentially coming to the PlayStation 5. It feels like an eternity since we last had a new mainline Gears game, and as someone who has followed the franchise since its inception on the Xbox 360, I’m eager to see what The Coalition has in store for us this time around.

5 years ago, The Coalition dropped the latest mainline Gears of War game (that’s Gears 5 for those who missed it). Ever since then, gamers like me have been eagerly waiting to see what they would bring to the table with the Xbox Series X’s might. Finally, at the 2024 Xbox Showcase, our curiosity was put to rest with the announcement of the next mainline Gears game – a prequel named Gears of War: E-Day.

Yet, fresh whispers and job postings seem to suggest that Gears of War: E-Day’s launch might not just mark a new path for the Locust. These recent indications could potentially point towards a PlayStation 5 debut for this game, which would be a first for the series.

Recent Xbox Exclusive Ports and Rumors for PS5

Since Microsoft revealed in February 2024 that four previously exclusive games from Xbox, including “Hi-Fi Rush” (2023), “Sea of Thieves” (2018), “Pentiment” (2022) and “Grounded” (2020), would be available on PS5 and Nintendo Switch, gamers have been both anxious and thrilled about the prospect of playing some of Xbox’s top-tier games on other platforms. In this initial phase of porting, it was announced that “Hi-Fi Rush” and “Sea of Thieves” would be playable on PS5, while “Pentiment” and “Grounded” would be accessible on both the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, justified this move by stating it was intended to expand their communities and foster a sense of unity among players.

After the unveiling of these games, whispers have surfaced about additional celebrated Xbox exclusives possibly making their way to the PS5. One such title is a remake of “Halo: Combat Evolved,” and another is “Gears of War: E-Day.” Regarding the latter, this speculation started with a June job listing on Microsoft Careers from The Coalition for a Senior Online Client Engineer. To qualify for the role, candidates need a bachelor’s degree in computer science, at least two years of experience working with matchmaking systems, and preferably, expertise in Xbox Live, PSN, Steam, or other online gaming platforms. Unlike other Coalition job postings, this one specifically mentions PSN. However, none of the other listings request experience with the PSN platform; instead, they ask for backgrounds in working with Xbox Live or other online gaming platforms.

The popular game series “Gears of War” hasn’t been available on PlayStation consoles up until now. However, you can play “Gears 5” and “Gears Tactics” on Steam. Additionally, “Gears of War: E-Day” is slated to be released soon on the PC store.

Gears of War: E-Day’s Potential on PS5

Although discussing someone with PSN experience doesn’t automatically imply a PlayStation version of “Gears of War,” there’s a strong possibility that the series might appear on Sony platforms. From a commercial perspective, this could significantly increase sales for “E-Day,” especially since many gamers may have stopped following the series during its five-year hiatus. As “E-Day” is a prequel set at the start of the Locust War, it presents an excellent opportunity for new players on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam to explore the war-ravaged world of Sera. If released strategically, “E-Day” could also function as a trial run to assess how Xbox’s most successful franchises fare on different consoles.

For multiplayer gaming, the PS5 version of “Gears of War: E-Day” might introduce one of the widely recognized PVP and PVE multiplayer modes to Sony gamers. If crossplay is allowed among Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms, a PS5 launch could make “E-Day” one of the most crowded games in the entire “Gears of War” series. Introducing “E-Day’s” multiplayer on the PS5 could also rejuvenate Gears Esports by attracting new players from Sony consoles and potentially boosting fan interest.

Gears of War’s PlayStation Potential Beyond E-Day

E-Day” on PlayStation 5 might increase sales for “E-Day”, but it also has potential to bring other older “Gears of War” games to the Sony console. For quite some time, there have been whispers about The Coalition developing a “Marcus Fenix Collection”, which could encompass all the mainline “Gears of War” games, similar to “Halo: The Master Chief Collection”. If this collection indeed materializes and is released after “Gears of War: E-Day” on PS5, it would offer PlayStation gamers a chance to immerse themselves in Marcus Fenix’s entire storyline without needing an Xbox or PC.
