As a long-time comic book fan and avid moviegoer, I have been eagerly anticipating the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Having grown up watching the Fox universe unfold on the big screen, I was initially skeptical about how this film would handle the characters and the universe they came from. However, after seeing it, I can confidently say that it is a love letter to everything that led up to Deadpool’s debut in 2016.

Way back before the Marvel Cinematic Universe took over, 20th Century Fox aimed to bring some of Marvel Comics’ legendary superheroes, like X-Men and Fantastic Four, to life on the silver screen. Most of their films were met with mixed reviews, but there were exceptions, such as the 2015 movie Deadpool. Interestingly, both Deadpool and Wolverine managed to do something that surprised many.

The first Marvel Studios film featuring Deadpool, known as the “Merc with a Mouth,” was anticipated to include numerous cameos of heroes from Fox. Many believed these appearances would merely make light of Fox productions, criticizing them for amusement. However, Deadpool and surprised us by becoming a heartfelt homage to the preceding Fox universe, acknowledging and praising its achievements throughout the years.

The Past is Important to Deadpool’s Success

1998 saw New Line Cinema debut the live-action “Blade” film featuring Wesley Snipes in the lead role. This R-rated movie remains one of the top comic book adaptations today despite subsequent sequels not matching its success. At that time, various Marvel Comics’ iconic characters had their rights distributed among different studios. Sony held Spider-Man, while Fox controlled the Fantastic Four and X-Men. Given “Blade’s” success, it wasn’t unexpected when Fox decided to bring the X-Men to the big screen, marking Hugh Jackman’s first outing as Wolverine alongside stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, and James Marsden. The film was a moderate hit, earning $296 million globally, and sparked a Fox franchise. They followed up with two more films in the trilogy – “X-2: X-Men United” and “X-Men: The Last Stand,” both surpassing $400 million worldwide. Although film quality fluctuated, Fox continued to expand the universe, introducing “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” with Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson. The franchise expanded further with “The Wolverine,” a new X-Men trilogy starting with “X-Men: First Class,” and the critically acclaimed “Logan.” Unfortunately, Fox’s efforts with the X-Men were more hit or miss, but they played a significant role in shaping the future of Marvel.

Deadpool, which debuted in 2016, only came to fruition because of a leak of test footage that was well-received from fans across social media. At the time, the movie was considered a risk as it was an R-rated movie. However, it quickly became a huge success for Fox and saw the studio greenlight the sequel, which came out two years later. It seemed inevitable that a third film would happen, as box office returns for Deadpool 2 were impressive, but then Disney purchased 21st Century Fox – which halted any X-Men related projects for years. Until Deadpool & Wolverine.

Why Deadpool & Wolverine’s Love Letter to Fox is Important

When Marvel Studios announced they were making “Deadpool 3,” fans speculated if it would lose its edge or make fun of Fox. Instead, “Deadpool & Wolverine” chose to acknowledge the past leading up to 2016’s “Deadpool.” For Ryan Reynolds, playing Wade Wilson was a rocky road – his initial portrayal as Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” left fans disappointed, as Wilson lacked a mouth and resembled nothing like the beloved character. Despite this, Reynolds persisted in advocating for a “Deadpool” film, pushing for years. Eventually, leaked test footage swayed Fox, leading to the successful franchise we know today. Reynolds’ tenacity, along with the Fox universe, brought the cherished “Deadpool” movie to life. Without these elements, fans may not have experienced the beloved film from years ago.

The Fox production of its own Marvel universe on the cinema screen was chaotic at times, yet it had delightful instances. With its gifted actors and enduring franchise, Fox’s X-Men world remained noteworthy. The emergence of Fox’s Marvel films paved the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe we know today. Introducing some of Fox’s previous superheroes, as well as an iconic character who never got his chance on the big screen, proved to be a clever choice. Deadpool (and a few companions) now join the Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure.

Deadpool & Wolverine is exclusively playing in theaters now.
