Some Xbox One Consoles Are Running Into a Big Problem

Highlights

  • Some original Xbox One consoles are unable to update firmware, blocking access to online features and games.
  • The bug affecting some Xbox One consoles prevents updates and access to Xbox Live, sparking debate on online-only consoles.
  • In addition, the Xbox 360 marketplace shutdown disappointed fans, but online multiplayer servers remain active.

As an avid gamer and long-time Xbox One user, I find myself deeply concerned about the recent reports of some original Xbox One consoles being unable to update their firmware, preventing access to online features and games. This issue has personally affected me, as my old but cherished Xbox One console is now rendered useless due to this unexpected bug.

Some early Xbox One game consoles may encounter difficulties updating to the most recent firmware, resulting in a lack of access to features like Xbox Live and internet-dependent games. The full scope of this problem is still under investigation, but it’s possible that only consoles with very outdated software are affected.

For those who fondly used the Xbox 360 marketplace, disappointment ensued with its closure. This signified an end to purchasing new content for the console via the marketplace. However, access to online multiplayer servers remains unchanged. Meanwhile, some Xbox One users might face issues as a result.

According to Digital Foundry’s report, certain initial versions of the Xbox One console may encounter difficulties updating to the most recent firmware. Importantly, this problem does not seem to affect any of the Xbox One X/S or Xbox Series X/S models. Instead, it appears that only the “set-top box” models are experiencing issues. At present, there have been sporadic reports about Xbox One consoles facing this problem, leading us to believe that a small number may be affected.

Xbox One Bug Prevents Some Users From Accessing Xbox Live

It appears that certain users encounter issues when upgrading from outdated firmware versions. Besides missing out on the newest console features and enhancements, this update problem also impairs the console’s ability to connect to Xbox Live. Consequently, players may find themselves unable to play online-dependent games or digital Xbox One titles if their console is not designated as the primary one in their account.

Users have attempted a factory reset on their consoles, but this seems to worsen the issue. The reason being, when setting up the console for the first time, an internet connection is required. During this process, the console attempts to update its software, leading users back to the beginning and encountering the same problems. This is a notable concern since many consoles are bought second-hand from third-party sellers, which have most likely been factory reset. Consequently, some of these devices become temporarily unusable due to the necessary software update.

Currently, Microsoft hasn’t shared any details about the cause of this unexpected issue or proposed a solution yet. Given that the problem seemingly popped up unexpectedly, it’s reasonable to expect they’ll resolve it and this won’t be an ongoing issue for us dedicated fans. As we anxiously wait for a fix, this incident has ignited discussions within our community about the increasing reliance of the industry on online-only functionalities. Even though physical discs should work fine with the console, some consoles becoming inoperable due to a bug raises concerns among us about the potential drawbacks of online-only gaming systems.
