As a long-time fan of Giancarlo Esposito’s captivating performances, I am beyond excited about his role as Sidewinder in Captain America: Brave New World! His ability to keep his character a secret until the San Diego Comic-Con was nothing short of masterful.

Giancarlo Esposito had managed to keep his character hidden for a while, even following the release of Marvel’s first trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World.” It is one of the new characters that team up with Anthony Mackie in the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World” film. This is the initial “Captain America” movie without Chris Evans as the Star-Spangled hero.

When Esposito appeared in the trailer, Marvel enthusiasts quickly started sharing their ideas about his character. Some thought he might be Raul Bushman or George Washington “G.W.” Bridge, while others speculated he was the head of the LAF criminal gang, Georges Batroc. At that point, Esposito had already clarified the confusion about his enigmatic role on set.

In a thrilling announcement made at San Diego Comic-Con and shared on TikTok, actor Esposito revealed his role in the upcoming Captain America film as the King of the Serpent Society, Sidewinder. On stage, he excitedly declared, “I can say it? I can say it, wow! I can finally unveil it! I am the King of the Serpent Society. I am Sidewinder!” The crowd erupted in cheers and applause. Fans were elated, with many expressing their high expectations due to Esposito’s impressive acting resume. One fan exclaimed, “You’re arguably one of the best actors to play any villain in movies or shows,” while another wrote, “A marvelous, outstanding actor in every role he plays!” accompanied by numerous clapping hand emojis.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Mando (from Better Call Saul) hinted at more details about Sidewinder. He described Sidewinder as a ‘hands-on’ character who is skilled in using the tools of his profession. Moreover, he mentioned that some aspects of Sidewinder may differ from their portrayal in the comics, possibly altered for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Mando added that he finds the character intriguing because Sidewinder isn’t initially a villain but comes to his role through a unique path. He hopes this aspect of the character will be further explored in the series, as it offers him an opportunity to play a character who uses his physicality rather than just his brain to execute plans.

In the comic books, the character known as Sidewinder was originally Seth Voelker, a professor of Economics who was let go from his job and later employed by Roxxon Oil Corporation with the task of stealing the enigmatic artifact, the Serpent Crown. The corporation altered him chemically to grant him the power of teleportation, marking the start of his criminal career as Sidewinder. He successfully obtained the Serpent Crown, which has ties to the deity Set, bestowing upon its wearer immortality and mind control abilities. Subsequently, he established his own criminal organization, the Serpent Society, a gang of antagonists with snake motifs. He guaranteed the members that they would never be imprisoned again because of his teleportation powers.

In many encounters throughout Captain America’s storyline, Sidewinder has proven himself to be a recurring villain. Given this backstory, it’s not unexpected that Sidewinder might appear in the movie “Brave New World.” From the trailer, it seems that Marvel may have adjusted some aspects of Sidewinder’s appearance, or they could still be keeping his true look under wraps. In the comics, he is depicted wearing a red mask, a reptilian neckpiece, armor reminiscent of snakes, and a flowing cloak. It will be intriguing to witness how actor Esposito brings Sidewinder to life on screen and how his confrontation with Captain America unfolds, as Esposito hints that his character is tough and highly physical.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
