More Details On The Latest Bungie Layoffs

As a longtime fan of Bungie and their groundbreaking work in the gaming industry, I find myself deeply saddened and concerned by the recent news of massive layoffs at the company. Having followed their journey from the Halo series to Destiny, I’ve developed a personal connection with the people behind these beloved games.

On Wednesday mornings, it’s never easy to share news, but here goes: Bungie, my beloved game developer, unveiled some changes that affected our team. They announced layoffs and shifts in employment, which unfortunately resulted in 220 talented individuals saying goodbye, while 155 of us found a new home at Sony, and another 75 joined a fresh studio.

According to CEO Pete Parsons, these decisions are likely to impact all tiers of our organization, particularly many of our top-level positions such as executives and senior leaders, when he discussed the upcoming job cuts.

It appears that at certain stages, as TopMob has discovered, aspects such as quality assurance, customer service for players, and teams concentrating on visuals, audio, and music are involved, among other things. It seems that particular sectors have experienced a greater impact compared to others.

“My whole team is gone,” former Player Support Analyst Alexandra posted on Twitter.

“Allie, a previous employee at Bungie’s merchandise department, expressed her feelings. She’s fed up with the continuous layoffs. Her repeated call was for unity – unionize, unionize, unionize.”

In essence, there was no action I could take to prevent being laid off. On the contrary, I was putting in such extensive hours that numerous individuals expressed concerns, saying things like “You’ll be fine, we need you to train/manage the outsourcers.” This sentiment was echoed by Nadia, a colleague who worked on music for Bungie.

Regarding high-level positions like senior leaders and executives, it hasn’t been confirmed by TopMob that anyone has been dismissed so far. If we find out about such changes, the article will be revised promptly.

As a seasoned observer of the gaming industry and having followed Bungie’s journey for quite some time, I find the scale of the layoffs at the company alarming. With my background in human resources and understanding of business dynamics, it seems to me that such a drastic reduction in workforce could have been avoided with better strategic planning and financial management.
