Marc-Alexis Cote, the head of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, has left Ubisoft after nearly 20 years with the company. This announcement follows Ubisoft’s decision to hand control of the Assassin’s Creed series to Vantage Studios, a newly created company in which Tencent has a 25% ownership stake.
Alexandre Cote began his career at Ubisoft in 2005 as a software engineer. He first joined the *Assassin’s Creed* team as a lead level designer on *Brotherhood*, and later became game director for *Assassin’s Creed 3* and the critically acclaimed *Black Flag*. In 2022, while working on *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, he was appointed to oversee the entire *Assassin’s Creed* franchise, taking charge of planning its future direction.
Assassin’s Creed Boss Marc-Alexis Cote Leaves Ubisoft After Over 20 Years
This week, Ubisoft executive Cote left the company, as announced in an email to staff. IGN reports that Cote was offered a leadership position at Vantage Studios, but he declined. Vantage Studios co-CEO Christophe Derennes expressed disappointment with this decision. It appears Ubisoft hoped Cote would stay on in some capacity, but he disagreed with the direction of Vantage Studios and the future of the *Assassin’s Creed* franchise.

It’s unclear how Jonathan Dumont’s departure will affect future *Assassin’s Creed* games. However, the upcoming “Valley of Memory” DLC for *Assassin’s Creed Mirage*, scheduled for release on November 18th, shouldn’t be impacted. This free addition will take players to the historical site of AlUla in Saudi Arabia with the characters Basim and Dervis. While the DLC faced some criticism for its connection to the Saudi Arabian government, Ubisoft insists they maintained complete creative freedom over the story.

The next *Assassin’s Creed* game, currently known as *Hexe*, might be particularly sensitive to changes in the series’ overall direction. While details are scarce – including a release date – *Hexe* is expected to be set in 16th-century Central Europe during the time of the Holy Roman Empire and the witch hunts. Unconfirmed reports suggest the story will center on a protagonist seeking revenge for their mother’s death, but it’s best to remember these are just rumors until Ubisoft officially reveals more.
