Stranger Things Season 5 Should Introduce Some New Monsters

Highlights

  • It’s time for Stranger Things to switch up enemies and introduce new creatures for Season 5.
  • Vecna’s return in Season 5 could bring new challenges and emotional layers for the Hawkins gang.
  • The Duffer brothers should aim to top Vecna with a new monster or humanoid antagonist in the final season.

As a seasoned gamer and longtime Stranger Things enthusiast, I can confidently say that the Duffer brothers have their work cut out for them when it comes to Season 5 of this beloved series. After the chilling introduction of Vecna in Season 4, I’m eager to see what new terrors await our brave Hawkins gang in the final season.

Following the appearance of Vecna in Stranger Things Season 4, it’s possible that the creators, the Duffer brothers, should consider introducing different adversaries for Season 5. For most of Stranger Things, the fearsome creatures from the Upside Down have been quite similar, with only a handful of distinct species. The Demogorgon, Demodogs, and Demobats all exhibit similar characteristics. Given that they are all part of the Mind Flayer’s collective consciousness, and by extension, Vecna, it’s not unexpected that these monsters share similar appearances. To keep things engaging for the final season, the Duffer brothers should introduce fresh enemies for Eleven and the Hawkins gang to battle against in the Upside Down.

As a devoted fan of Stranger Things, I can’t help but reminisce about the chilling creatures that have emerged from the Upside Down with each new season. In the very first season, the Demogorgon was the dreadful menace that kept us on our toes. Although Vecna stole the limelight in Season 4, the Demogorgon remains Stranger Things’ most iconic monster and a symbol of its eerie universe, next to Eleven herself.

1. Following Vecna’s defeat in the Upside Down by Eleven, his body in Hawkins is incinerated by Steve, Nancy, and Robin. However, when they rush outside to check, Vecna’s corpse has vanished, leaving audiences with the impression that he may be alive for Season 5. While a return of Vecna seeking revenge on Eleven could be an exciting plotline for Season 5, it might seem redundant given that the group in Hawkins spent all of Season 4 battling Vecna since his murder of Chrissy Cunningham and turning Eddie into the prime suspect. Furthermore, a popular fan theory suggests that Eddie Munson will rise from the dead as a servant of Vecna, but this could feel repetitive as well, considering the extensive focus on Vecna in Season 4.

Season 5 Needs To Top Vecna With a New Monster

Vecna’s character design was a real win for the practical effects department, who pieced together Jamie Campbell Bower’s bodysuit like a jigsaw puzzle after making a full-body cast of Bower. Vecna’s disjointed fingers were mechanical joint prosthetics that added several inches to Bower’s own fingers. It was the first time in Stranger Things history that a villain looked entirely human and understood the inner workings of a human mind. Bower’s chilling portrayal of Vecna was what made Season 4 so successful, so perhaps replicating that lightning in a bottle feeling with a new enemy is precisely what Season 5 needs.

In Stranger Things Season 5, instead of relying solely on Demogorgons, Demodogs, and Demobats as terrifying foes, there is a possibility that a new human antagonist could be introduced, either taking over from or joining forces with Vecna. This theory surrounding Eddie Munson/Kas has garnered significant attention online due to the character’s popularity. If Eddie were to become an adversary, it would provide a surprising twist for the show, as well as offering numerous opportunities for emotional depth in the Hawkins gang. They care about Eddie, they admire him. Should he be under Vecna’s control in Season 5, they would grapple with internal conflict when faced with either fighting Eddie or finding a means to free him from Vecna’s grasp.

Season 5 Could Have a Human or Monster Antagonist

Though Will Byers, Eleven, and Max aren’t villains, they have the strongest ties to the Upside Down. With their connections, it’s possible that Vecna could manipulate Eleven or use Will’s abilities for his own purposes. However, the unique appeal of Stranger Things lies in its monsters. Although humanoid antagonists can be intriguing, what makes Stranger Things special is the presence of bizarre and mutated creatures from the Upside Down. The creators could introduce new types of these monsters like Democats or Demosharks. The potential for these Upside Down monster variations is limitless, especially when considering animal-type creatures from the Upside Down.

But perhaps, as an alternative, another humanoid entity like Vecna exists. Maybe Vecna isn’t the only human to be banished to the Upside Down. Maybe Eleven has an even more complicated past than originally thought. But the monsters are what sets Stranger Things apart from other sci-fi adventure shows, so the Duffer brothers should capitalize on Vecna’s success and conjure up an equally terrifying, equally lovable villain. There are huge shoes to fill after Vecna, but to up the ante for Season 5, a new influx of monsters could be the pull the Duffer brothers need to secure an unforgettable send-off for Stranger Things.
