Modern technology allows anime games to closely resemble the anime shows they’re based on. It used to be difficult to capture that look with the limited graphics of older systems, but advancements in 3D technology and the use of cel-shading have made it much easier to bring anime’s unique style to life in games.
It’s become common for anime-based games to look so much like the anime itself that it’s hard to tell the difference, especially with games using a cel-shaded art style. This anime-inspired look isn’t limited to direct anime adaptations; we’re also seeing it in popular RPGs like *Tales of Arise* and *Genshin Impact*. But among all these games, which official anime adaptations are the most visually impressive?
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Gokus As Far As The Eye Can See
Although *Dragon Ball FighterZ* isn’t a 3D game, it’s known for its stunning 2D graphics. This style actually makes it feel more like watching the *Dragon Ball Z* anime, which is a big reason why fans enjoy playing it.
Okay, so this game is a 3v3 fighter with a HUGE roster – seriously, tons of characters. You’ve got all the Gokus you can imagine, plus pretty much every important hero and villain from the series. You’ll be punching, kicking, blasting energy, and flying around fighting through all the iconic moments and faces you know and love. It’s a really flashy, over-the-top fighting game!
One Piece Odyssey
A Standalone RPG Adventure
While One Piece Odyssey doesn’t use the cel-shaded style common in many recent anime games, its 3D character models still look great. The game offers a relaxed experience with lots of action, presented in a turn-based battle system, making it accessible for anime fans.
This RPG lets you quickly command the entire Straw Hat Pirates crew and embark on a big adventure. While it includes content not found in the official *One Piece* anime and might not compare directly to those storylines, it’s a visually appealing game that captures the unique and quirky spirit of the series.
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy
More Ninjas Than You Can Shake A Shuriken At
CyberConnect2 is a highly respected anime game developer known for working on popular franchises like *Naruto*. *Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy* is a 2017 updated collection of the first three *Naruto* games, originally released in North America between 2008 and 2012.
Even today, these games look fantastic on their original consoles, especially as fast-paced 3D action fighters. This remaster simply enhances the visuals, making the ninja combat even more striking. The original game was a groundbreaking title that captivated both anime enthusiasts and newcomers, and many games developed by CyberConnect2 are visually stunning and stand out as top-tier anime-inspired titles.
Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2
An Incredible Visual Achievement
Both *Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2* and the first game successfully combine fast-paced 3D action with fighting game mechanics, similar to what CyberConnect2 achieved with their *Naruto* games. The *Demon Slayer* anime is known for its unique look, with bold outlines emphasizing the action, and this game perfectly captures that same visual style, making the characters appear almost like they’re from a 2D animation.
The game is visually stunning, with incredible effects like crashing waves and spreading fires. It also features a large roster of characters, ensuring that every fighting game fan will find someone they enjoy playing as.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R
Stand And Deliver
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R is an updated version of a fighting game first released in North America in 2014. It includes characters from throughout the entire JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series, up to the eighth part, JoJolion.
The game’s combat is fast-paced and chaotic, with most characters using their Stands, just like in the anime. The graphics beautifully recreate the anime’s unique and striking visual style, bringing it to life in the game.
Fate/Samurai Remnant
Omega Force Breaking Boundaries
Omega Force, the game developer, doesn’t always receive high praise because they’re known for their ‘Musou’ style games, which sometimes lack polish. While some fans enjoy the repetitive but action-packed gameplay, others find it doesn’t offer enough variety. However, *Fate/Samurai Remnant* breaks the mold, offering RPG elements and action in more focused, smaller-scale combat.
Players take on the role of a samurai in a fantastical reimagining of Japan, traveling across a world map to deliver justice. This new installment in the *Fate* series features an entirely original story, not adapted from an anime, making it a must-play for fans of the franchise.
Fist Of The North Star: Lost Paradise
The Yakuza Team Steps Up
While *Fist of the North Star* has inspired several video games, most of those titles haven’t been released outside of Japan. Though it may not be as well-known among newer anime fans, those who grew up with the series still consider it a classic.
Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise perfectly captures the spirit of the original series in its action-packed gameplay. It nails the gritty, post-apocalyptic world and delivers incredibly detailed and over-the-top violence. Visually, the game is stunning, which is no surprise given it was created by the team behind the popular Yakuza/Like a Dragon series – they’re masters at blending serious storytelling with exciting action and humor.
Shin-Chan: Me And The Professor On Summer Vacation – The Endless Seven-Day Journey
A Japanese Franchise Premieres With Comedy
Okay, so I recently checked out Shin-chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation -The Endless Seven-Day Journey. Honestly, it’s based on a super popular anime in Japan, but a lot of us in the West probably haven’t heard of it. The original My Summer Vacation game (or Boku no Natsuyasumi as it’s known in Japan) came out way back on the PS1 in 2000, and this new version basically takes that same laid-back, chill gameplay and wraps it up in a Crayon Shin-chan skin. It’s a really relaxing experience, if you’re into that kind of thing!
Okay, so the game looks *amazing*. The backgrounds are all hand-drawn, but the characters are 3D, and honestly, it nails the anime style perfectly. The writing is really funny thanks to the localization team, and as a life sim, it’s packed with stuff to do that totally brings back those nostalgic summer childhood memories.
