As a long-time Pokemon enthusiast who has spent countless hours exploring the Kanto region and beyond, I must say that Nintendo’s decision to bring back the original Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team on their Switch Online service is a delightful surprise! While I was hoping for a mainline Pokemon game, this spin-off title offers an exciting adventure that I haven’t experienced since 2005.

On August 9, Nintendo will include the game “Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team” in their Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. Over the past couple of years, the offerings of this service have expanded significantly, thanks to the introduction of the Expansion Pack tier which grants players access to a wide variety of older games from the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 libraries. Although opinions about this service remain divided, Nintendo continues to add new titles every month. This month’s addition is an unanticipated yet highly regarded game – “Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team”.

For a considerable period, fans have been eagerly anticipating the main series Pokemon games such as Pokemon Red, Crystal, and Sapphire to be available on the subscription service. At present, only spin-off Pokemon games like the Pokemon Stadium duology, Pokemon Puzzle League, the Game Boy Pokemon Trading Card Game, and Pokemon Snap for N64 are accessible via Nintendo Switch Online. The most recent addition to the service is another spin-off, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, which was among the initial games in the popular Mystery Dungeon subseries.

The initial game in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series was released on both the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS in 2005, divided into two editions: Red Rescue Team for the GBA and Blue Rescue Team for the DS. Similar to other main Pokemon games, they each had unique characteristics and exclusive Pokemon. The Nintendo Switch Online service will offer the Game Boy Advance version of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team on August 9, 2024, through the NSO Expansion Pack tier.

When Is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Coming to Nintendo Switch Online?

  • August 9, 2024

In the game titled Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, you find yourself transformed into a Pokemon, with all recollections of your previous human life erased. A chain of events then unfolds, leading you and your companion Pokemon on an adventure to explore numerous dungeons. This journey is intertwined with a plot that aims to save the world. Although Red Rescue Team (and by association Blue Rescue Team) has a shorter narrative compared to its subsequent versions, it remains highly appreciated as part of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon subseries.

Fans are taken aback by the return of the older game title, “Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX,” since it’s already available on Nintendo Switch as an updated version of both “Red Rescue Team” and “Blue Rescue Team.” However, it’s worth noting that this new release doesn’t include all the features from the original game. The most conspicuous omission is the Personality Quiz at the beginning of the game, which helped determine the player’s Pokemon character. By re-releasing “Red Rescue Team,” fans can relive what made the initial installment in the series so unique and memorable in its original form.
