The latest update to Pokémon GO has increased the maximum player level from 50 to 80 and given a boost to players who were already below that limit. The update also made it easier to level up, and as a result, many players instantly jumped several levels. For instance, I went from level 35 to level 43 after the update.
The recent Pokemon GO leveling update seemed promising – it should have made getting to higher levels easier and given a nice benefit to existing players. And while there are definitely a lot of good things about the update, like increased storage and the new daily adventure egg, the initial launch revealed a long-standing issue the game continues to struggle with.
In Pokemon GO, More Items Can Mean More Problems
Niantic, Inc.
Whenever a player gains a level in *Pokemon GO*, they receive various rewards, including cosmetic items, Pokeballs, berries, and items to heal their Pokemon. This influx of goodies can be either a welcome boost or a bit too much to handle, depending on how much storage space you have.
Ugh, we’ve all been there – constantly bumping up against the item storage limit, right? Usually, I end up deleting stuff or ditching the less useful items just to make space. When I’m really low on things like Master Balls or Max Revives, those level-up rewards are a lifesaver. But picture this: getting two levels at once? Cool, right? Three? Even better! Well, let me tell you, I – and a bunch of other players – recently hit a glitch where we leveled up *eight* times all at once! It was crazy!
Why Can’t I Spin Pokestops With Full Item Storage?

Getting all these items seems like a great benefit for both dedicated and occasional *Pokémon GO* players. However, there’s a catch: the game restricts a key function when your item storage is full. Specifically, you can’t spin Pokéstops if your storage is full, and spinning Pokéstops is crucial because it allows you to…
- You can’t earn special research without spinning Pokestops
- You can’t earn your daily bonus without spinning Pokestops
- You can’t earn gifts without spinning Pokestops
- You can’t earn progress on tasks that require spinning Pokestops
Right after the latest update, players of *Pokemon GO* flooded social media and online forums with complaints about their limited storage space. My own storage was over by around 200, but many others were over by thousands!

It’s frustrating to have to delete so many items just to make room for the things you get from Pokéstops. The core problem is that you’re often deleting good items – even great ones like Master Balls – just so you *can* get more basic items like Poké Balls. You’re not clearing space for upgrades, you’re clearing space to get the same stuff, or even worse, lower-quality items.
This problem has existed for a while, and normally it’s just a minor annoyance. If your item storage is full when you spin a PokéStop, you usually just delete a few things and try again. However, when you have thousands of items to delete, it becomes a really difficult and frustrating process.
The problem of full item storage when spinning Pokéstops could be easily solved by allowing players to spin them even when full. The game already does something similar with gifts – you can open them to build friendship and earn Stardust, even with a full inventory. Niantic previously had a feature that let you spin Pokéstops with a full inventory, but it was removed due to technical issues.
While it might not be the most pressing issue, improving storage in *Pokemon GO* would be a valuable improvement. The core gameplay revolves around catching Pokemon and visiting Pokéstops, and limited storage hinders that experience. Players will always have to manage their storage, and requiring Pokecoins to expand it is a reasonable way for Niantic to generate revenue for a free-to-play game.

With the October season pass, you can earn Pokecoins through both the free and paid options, giving you a chance to purchase extra storage this month.
Overall, the recent Pokemon GO update that added more levels is a positive change, despite some initial frustration from dedicated players. The extra levels, new rewards, and fresh features are great for a game that’s been popular for almost a decade. Niantic, please just let players spin Pokéstops even when their item storage is full!
