As a die-hard LEGO and Marvel fan with countless hours spent saving the galaxy and battling bad guys across various dimensions, I couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of a new LEGO Marvel game! TT Games has a proven track record of delivering high-quality LEGO games, and their previous work on the Marvel universe is nothing short of phenomenal.
Over the years, TT Games has enjoyed a prosperous and enduring collaboration with LEGO and its affiliated partners. Primarily recognized for developing numerous video games based on Disney and Pixar films, TT Games initially ventured into the LEGO universe in 2005 with the launch of LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game. Following the success of this title, they released LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga in 2007. Since then, TT Games has focused exclusively on creating LEGO games, producing a total of 19 titles up until now.
Those 19 have run the gamut of pop-culture, covering major franchises like Batman, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic World, Indiana Jones, and Lord of the Rings. TT Games has often double-dipped with its LEGO adaptations, delivering several games per franchise. Occasionally, that double-dip turns into a triple-dip, and that’s been the case with TT Games and Marvel. But it’s been seven years since the last LEGO Marvel game, and it’s about time the studio dipped in just one more time.
A New LEGO Marvel Game Just Needs to Copy TT Games’ Homework to Succeed
LEGO Marvel Superheroes Has Laid Some Strong Foundations
Back in 2013, I got my hands on the very first “LEGO Marvel Superheroes” game, and it’s incredible how well it holds up a decade later! It’s one of those rare Marvel games that gathers the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and many more, making it a dream come true for any Marvel fan. To this day, “LEGO Marvel Superheroes” continues to feel like the complete package, boasting an impressive 180 unlockable characters and a wealth of main and side missions that delve deep into every nook and cranny of the Marvel universe.
Four years after the initial release of LEGO Marvel Superheroes, TT Games built upon its strong base, significantly expanding it in the sequel, LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2. This follow-up may not surpass its predecessor in terms of quality but certainly outdoes it in scale. The game boasts a total of 191 distinct characters, with nearly 300 if you count variations, encompassing an even broader range of heroes and villains from the Marvel universe’s cosmic realms.
The vast open-world of LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 has been significantly enlarged, offering a multitude of settings spanning different eras and dimensions. Among these are Hala, a devastated Asgard, Attilan, Wakanda, and Nueva York. This expansive game is filled with an engaging narrative where Kang the Conqueror links these diverse locations and characters together. It’s challenging to envision a Marvel game that could be more comprehensive than LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2. In simpler terms, the game offers a wide range of Marvel-themed locales from various time periods and dimensions, all connected by Kang the Conqueror, in an immersive storyline.
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers Paves the Way for Another LEGO MCU Adaptation
Nestled between the two games in the LEGO Marvel Superheroes series, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is sometimes considered an outsider within the LEGO Marvel video game family. Instead of one expansive open-world, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers offers several smaller hub zones. Unlike previous games that featured a diverse array of characters from across the Marvel universe, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers focuses solely on its namesake team and their associated MCU films. This results in a somewhat limited character selection. However, despite some flaws in individual missions, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers remains an enjoyable experience. It also sets solid groundwork if TT Games ever decides to explore more of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
LEGO DC Super-Villains Paves a New Path Forward for LEGO Marvel
TT Games doesn’t always need to draw from its own past with Marvel. An alternative approach would be for TT Games to take inspiration from the formula of LEGO DC Super-Villains, and create a game centered around Marvel’s most famous villains. This game could also adopt the detailed character-creation tool found in LEGO DC Super-Villains, as fans have been yearning for this feature in more recent releases.
