As a longtime enthusiast of both anime and reality television, I find it fascinating to delve into the world of these unique series that blur the lines between entertainment and survival. Having binge-watched countless hours of mindless reality TV in my time, I can’t help but appreciate the depth and thoughtfulness that goes into creating stories like Tomodachi Game and Starship Operators.
Reality TV and anime, two popular forms of television entertainment worldwide, provide a means for people to unwind and escape. Beyond this shared purpose, it’s challenging to find many other commonalities between them. Nevertheless, there are instances where they may exhibit similar characteristics.
In many anime series, you’ll find similar elements to reality TV such as competitions, everyday life scenarios, and emotional relationships that keep viewers hooked. Some anime even take ideas directly from reality TV, while others share a similar vibe without being direct copies. Here are five anime that explore themes reminiscent of reality TV.
5 Blue Lock
Become The Best
In the anime titled “Blue Lock“, we find a storyline that shares similarities with popular reality TV competitions like Physical 100, where one hundred physically fit contestants face grueling challenges to become the last man standing and receive both honor and monetary rewards. Instead, in “Blue Lock“, the characters participate in a football competition. The goal is for high school athletes to fight their way through and secure a spot on Japan’s potential World Cup team in the future.
Having spent a significant portion of my life immersed in the world of football, I can confidently say that the rigorous training program these athletes embark upon is nothing short of extraordinary. The ultimate objective is to mold the finest striker the globe has ever seen. As an avid spectator and follower of this sport, I’ve witnessed countless matches, including those watched by football federation personnel from Japan and beyond.
Blue Lock features a vibrant ensemble of characters reminiscent of a reality TV show, where rivalry takes center stage. There are those with outsized egos, relentless aspirants, individuals driven by indomitable will, the eccentric and the fiercely competitive, as well as those who embody sheer determination personified. Blue Lock offers all the suspense of a sporting television event.
4 Grand Blue Dreaming
Japanese Frat Fun
An amusing anime titled “Grand Blue” has only seen twelve episodes based on its manga to date. Unlike other sports-themed animes, this one offers a unique twist. The characters aren’t engaged in competitions or even regularly practicing their sport. Instead, they spend the majority of their time enjoying parties and embarking on comical escapades.
“Set in the Izu Peninsula, Grand Blue focuses on a group of university students who are members of the diving club, although they seldom engage in actual diving. This series is reminiscent of a light-hearted, reality television program about everyday life, featuring characters such as the jokester, the practical jokers, and the straight men, all typical archetypes found in slice-of-life shows.”
In each installment, we delve into the daily lives of students, reminiscent of a reality show like Big Brother. They reside together and often find themselves in humorous disputes. Lectures, dates, and occasional stunning diving moments make up their days, offering plenty of intrigue for those who enjoy observing people as they live out their lives on TV in the series, Grand Blue Dreaming.
3 Danganronpa
The Deadliest Student Competition
Undeniably, the most perilous item on this roster is Danganronpa, a televised game of despair, and without a doubt, the last reality-TV style anime one would wish to participate in. Initially a video game belonging to the murder mystery visual novel genre, Danganronpa narrates a tale where students enroll in an elite high school.
Hope’s Peak Academy, ordinarily admitting exceptionally skilled individuals across various professions, such as top-tier athletes, writers, and detectives, also accommodates students chosen through lottery. These elite students are often referred to as ‘Ultimates’ or ‘Super High School Level’ representatives in their respective fields. However, the school isn’t what it appears. Trapped within its walls is a group of these Ultimates, along with one unlucky student, by a mechanical and cunning bear named Monokuma. The only means of escape is to murder another student, but during class trials that follow, the killer must ensure their crime remains undetected. The objective is either to commit an unsolvable murder or to identify every perpetrator in a series of trials, thus winning the game.
In the course of the series, it’s unveiled that these violent incidents and court proceedings are broadcast globally, providing a platform for people to share in the emotional turmoil portrayed on screen, mirroring the bleak reality of their oppressive society.
2 Tomodachi Game
Mind Games On Debt Games
A show titled “Tomodachi Game” shares similarities with popular death games like “Squid Game,” but with a key difference: in this series, characters are not typically at risk of losing their lives. Instead, they stand to lose their financial stability or livelihoods. The participants are usually individuals burdened by life-threatening debts who seek to escape their predicament, only to find themselves passing the debt on to other unlucky competitors.
A game that, while seemingly safer, might still be considered equally ruthless, as it sets friends against one another through a succession of demanding and manipulative tasks, much like the one portrayed in the Liar Game comic series. As with any fictional contest that combines entertainment with harshness, the Friends Game is broadcast within the storyline, allowing viewers to send messages and emojis which the host can display, creating an illusion of a live broadcast.
In the captivating series known as “Tomodachi Game,” the audience will witness a mesmerizing display of cunning strategies and manipulative mental challenges as the competition unfolds. The allure of canceled debts and vast riches serves as an irresistible draw, keeping both in-universe fans of “Tomodachi Game” and real-world viewers hooked.
1 Starship Operators
Reality TV To The Stars
- Creator: Ryou Mizuno
- Seasons: 1
- Genre: Space Opera
- Release Date: January 5, 2005
An example less frequently chosen than many others on the list, yet possibly the most relevant of all, is found in “Starship Operators”. The narrative delves into the 73rd class at the Defense University of a planet named Kibi, which has fallen under control of an entity referred to as the Henrietta Alliance of Planetary Nations. Sadly, their home planet is now occupied by this alliance. The main characters, cadets themselves, are on a mission to liberate their world and seek financial assistance for their cause. Consequently, they turn to the Galaxy Network, offering live reality TV broadcasts as payment for the funds provided to support their efforts.
In an intriguing twist to reality TV, the space odysseys of these cadets and their starships are played out as if they were real. This unique blend of military sci-fi and anime is one of the most captivating uses of a cosmic narrative ever presented on television screens. Instead of watching famous personalities squabbling in a mansion, why not opt for a thrilling alternative – a team of space cadets dealing with actual galactic crises from within their spaceships?
Starship Operators presents a unique perspective on reality television, focusing on characters such as Executive Officer Sinon Kouzuki and Commanding Officer Cisca Kanzaki. Unlike many other reality shows, it delves into the realms of everyday life, mortality, and the universe itself.
