As a long-time fan of The Boys, I can hardly contain my excitement for Season 5! The return of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy is nothing short of phenomenal, and the prospect of delving deeper into his relationship with Homelander has me on the edge of my seat.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be stepping back into my Soldier Boy persona for “The Boys” Season 5! Our brilliant showrunner, Eric Kripke, has shared that we couldn’t resist the temptation of exploring more stories with this intriguing antagonist.

In Season 3 of “The Boys,” Jensen Ackles first appeared as Soldier Boy, a character who was initially America’s first superhero. Known as Benjamin, he underwent experimentation with Compound V during his service in the US Army during World War II. He led a group of superheroes, including Crimson Countess, Gunpowder, Swatto, Mindstorm, Black Noir, and the TNT Twins, collectively known as Payback. However, his team turned against him due to his aggressive behavior, and he was handed over to the Russians for three decades’ worth of excruciating experiments. Fans can look forward to Soldier Boy’s return in The Boys Season 5, where they will also get a glimpse of him alongside his son, Homelander.

As a gaming enthusiast, I was thrilled to hear Kripke discuss the upcoming season at San Diego Comic-Con. He shared with Gameradar+ what inspired them to reintroduce Ackles’ character in the final season. It turned out they were keen on emphasizing his bond with his kid. Kripke explained, “You see, we recognized that we hadn’t delved much into the father-son dynamic between Homelander and Soldier Boy. There’s a wealth of material there – exploring how Soldier Boy feels about Homelander, and vice versa, particularly regarding their father-child relationship. So, we decided to delve deeper into that connection.”

The fact that Soldier Boy is reappearing on the show isn’t shocking, given he’s still alive. Creator Kripke hinted at his return following the third season, expressing in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he couldn’t envision the series concluding without another glimpse of Soldier Boy. Kripke shared, “An old TV rule is never to kill someone unless absolutely necessary, and never close a door if you can leave it open. We’ll have to wait and see, but I find it hard to imagine the show wrapping up without Soldier Boy showing up again.” Additionally, he hinted at a possible alliance between Soldier Boy and his son, with a complicated relationship, suggesting that Soldier Boy might “flip sides.”

He said:

In the third season, Butcher deceived Soldier Boy, causing a deep-seated desire for revenge within him. As such, Soldier Boy makes for an outstanding adversary, as he turns against his former allies and aligns himself with superhumans instead.

In Season 3, audiences caught a glimpse of the tense relationship between the father and son, Soldier Boy and Homelander. The Boys stumbled upon Soldier Boy during a mission in Russia, managing to awaken him. As he regained consciousness, Soldier Boy exhibited new abilities, such as emitting destructive radiation when overwhelmed. In exchange for his assistance, they agreed to help him locate the remaining members of Payback if he killed Homelander’s arch-nemesis.

In Season 3, Soldier Boy significantly contributed, but his brief return in the fourth left fans craving more. Bringing him back for the finale is a smart move, as it satisfies disappointed viewers and allows for further exploration of his bond with his son, which creator Kripke suggests is not yet fully explored. Given Homelander’s personal struggles with his father figure, Soldier Boy’s presence may help him deal with these issues. Furthermore, their common enemy Butcher might lead to a potential alliance, which could be emotionally moving if they reconcile and work together. This could also result in enhanced superpowers for both characters, making the upcoming season even more exciting.

The Boys Season 5 is expected to premiere in 2026.
