  • Sephiroth’s portrayal in Kingdom Hearts by Lance Bass sparked a debate among fans about whether he was a good fit for the iconic character, but regardless, his performance as the character is memorable.

As a long-time fan who has spent countless hours battling the Heartless and their minions in the Kingdom Hearts universe, I must admit that it’s both amusing and endearing to learn about Lance Bass’ confession of never defeating Sephiroth, the formidable superboss from the first game. Despite being the original voice actor for this iconic character, even he couldn’t best his own creation!

In a surprising revelation, Lance Bass, who voiced Sephiroth in the early Kingdom Hearts series, admits he’s never managed to defeat the game’s formidable boss character, Sephirot (the superboss from Final Fantasy 7). This game, released in 2002, was groundbreaking as it combined Disney and Square Enix characters within a unique universe. The protagonist, Sora, teams up with Donald Duck and Goofy to fight the Heartless that threaten their worlds. Along the way, they encounter characters from Final Fantasy 8 (Squall Leonhart) and Final Fantasy 7 (Aerith Gainsborough). One of the game’s standout features was its challenging superbosses, offering players a chance to battle Sephiroth, the primary antagonist of Final Fantasy 7.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic portrayal of Sephiroth in the Kingdom Hearts series, particularly in the original game. The epic battle against him is notoriously challenging, earning a place among the toughest fights in the entire franchise. This secret boss appears when you’re on the brink of victory, sealing the keyhole at Hollow Bastion and then returning to the Olympus Coliseum.

During a Reddit AMA with Lance Bass and his husband Michael Turchin (first held in 2015 but recently rediscovered by GamesRadar), Bass was questioned about whether he had ever played Kingdom Hearts and if he had managed to defeat the character he provided a voice for. Bass responded that he played his character with confidence, yet admitted that Sephiroth is one of Kingdom Hearts’ toughest bosses, confessing he has never defeated Sephiroth himself. “No, I’ve never been able to vanquish my own character because he is incredibly difficult! However, it remains a significant shock when I inform people that I voiced Sephiroth,” Bass explained.

Why Lance Bass’ Sephiroth Struggles Aren’t Surprising

As a devoted fan, I can confidently say that Sephiroth has undeniably carved out an intimidating reputation within the realm of Kingdom Hearts, known for his blazing speed and immense power which make him an unforgettable adversary. Conquering this formidable foe rewards players with a unique cutscene, where Cloud and Sephiroth stand on the brink of battle, mirroring their epic clash from their original game. In Kingdom Hearts 2, Sephiroth then transformed into a hidden boss, extending his fierce rivalry with Cloud. Sadly, he didn’t make an appearance in Kingdom Hearts 3, leaving their story seemingly at a peaceful resolution following their final confrontation.

After Lance Bass voiced Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts once, George Newbern took over as the English voice actor for Sephiroth starting from Kingdom Hearts 2. However, for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, Sephiroth was recast again with Tyler Hoechlin stepping into the role.
