It’s like stepping into a time machine, back to when I was just a kid, eagerly waiting for the next episode of Sonic X or Big X to air.

Although well-known worldwide as a favorite form of entertainment today, it’s not always apparent just how rich in history many renowned animation studios that produce anime truly are. Now, one of the oldest and most respected names in anime is marking a significant milestone with some high-profile content available for free.

60 years ago, in the thriving era of Japanese television, Tokyo Movie Co., Ltd. (now known as TMS Entertainment) was born. This renowned anime studio in Japan has been a significant part of the industry since its establishment in 1964. In those early days, there was an increasing demand for televised Japanese animation, and Tokyo Movie Co. seized this opportunity by creating successful adaptations of popular ’60s manga from acclaimed creators like Osamu Tezuka and Fujiko Fujio.

TMS Entertainment, a well-established studio with a rich and multifaceted past, is marking its 60th anniversary in 2024 in a unique way – by offering free anime on their YouTube channel for the entire month of August. Sonic X: TMS Animating Sega’s High-Speed Mascot

To cap off the initial fortnight of August, what could be more fitting for Sega than a tribute to their iconic character – Sonic the Hedgehog? The 2000s TMS version of Sega’s renowned game series, Sonic X, was brought to audiences and children worldwide via 4Kids in the US and Fox Kids in the EU. This adaptation is considered one of the quintessential portrayals of the world and characters within the Sonic universe. Starting from August 1st, TMS will be releasing several episodes of this series on their YouTube channel, with a new episode dropping every day for two weeks.

Big X: An Anime Relic from Osamu Tezuka

Osamu Tezuka, known for his work in manga and anime, was one of the world’s most famous and impactful creators during the 20th century. One of his early works, “Big X”, focused on a sci-fi battle against an evil force seeking to control a powerful robotic weapon. This series, first aired in 1964 as TMS’s initial animated TV series, has unfortunately been largely lost over time. However, the first episode has undergone full digital restoration and will be available for free, with subtitles, on YouTube starting from Monday, August 12.

Super Dimension Century ORGUSS: A Cult Classic of Mecha Anime

In the ’80s, mecha was a highly influential anime genre with roots going back years and several beloved retro cult favorites. Originally set in the far-off year of 2062 (which seemed even further away in the ’80s), “Super Dimension Century ORGUSS” revolves around various powers battling for control, not just of the planet but also the galaxy. An unassuming pilot gets pulled into a futuristic, science-fiction-blended universe that bears resemblance to early isekai anime, as they’re suddenly transported to this reality. TMS will upload the first 10 episodes of “Super Dimension,” with two installments per day, from August 19th through the 23rd on their channel.

Lupin the IIIrd: Three Films from the World’s Greatest Thief

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement as we wrap up this month with one of the most cherished franchises not just in the TMS Catalog, but throughout Japanese pop culture – Lupin the IIIrd! This charismatic, unconventional thief has graced both feature films and series anime since the 1970s, an impressive feat considering it’s a franchise with directors like Hayao Miyazaki and Seijun Suzuki, legends in their respective fields.

Despite being created in distinct time periods and carrying unique atmospheres, these selections showcase the praiseworthy legacy of the studio, making them an ideal collection for folks yearning to relive cherished memories or for those eager to experience timeless classics for the first time.
