Even though Ghost of Yotei features a lively and responsive game world, it can still be challenging, particularly for players new to the series, as the combat is significantly more demanding than in the previous installment.

Honestly, this game is really throwing me for a loop! There are some things going on under the hood that it doesn’t really explain, and that’s okay, actually. I’ve been chatting with some friends, and they’re just as confused about a few things as I am, so it’s not just me struggling to figure it all out.

The Weapon Alignment state is causing a lot of confusion, so I’ve put together this quick guide to explain how it works.

What Does Being Weapon Aligned Mean?

Most people will likely be worried about this feature because they haven’t fully considered the benefits of the Undying Armor, which you receive through one of the game’s Mythic Tales.

Once you understand how this gear works, you’ll likely find it incredibly useful, just like I do. It’s one of the best armor sets in the game, especially if you’re good at switching weapons during fights.

Being ‘Weapon Aligned’ means choosing the best weapon to counter your opponent’s weapon. It’s like the stance system in Ghost of Tsushima, where you had to pick the right stance to stagger enemies – think of it as a rock-paper-scissors matchup.

I’ve detailed which weapon counters the other below for your convenience.

Weapon Effective Against
Wolf Blade (Katana) Against other Katanas. It will be Atsu’s primary weapon against most duels or one-on-one fights.
Dual Katana Against Polearms. The quick pace of the heavy strikes from this weapon can easily trigger the stagger break of polearm-wielding enemies.
Kusarigama Against enemies with Shields. Probably your least-used weapon, since you can quickly break shielded enemies using the “Claw and Talon” Technique on the weapon.
Yari Against enemies with Sickles. One of the most fun weapons to use in the game, plus the Typhoon Kick is crazy good at triggering staggers on sickle-wielding foes.
Odachi Against Brutes. You can obviously use this against any kind of opposing weapon, but it’s another situational weapon that’s best used against those annoying Brute-type enemies.

Benefits of Being Weapon Aligned

You might be wondering why it matters what weapon you choose, since you can use pretty much anything you like. And you’re right, you can use whatever you want, but there’s a catch.

Using the right weapons and ensuring they match your character’s build (Weapon Alignment) will significantly increase Atsu’s stagger and damage output. This is especially helpful when playing on harder difficulties like Hard or Lethal.

When your weapon is aligned, hitting enemies with strong attacks will cause them to become increasingly staggered. This means quickly switching to the best weapon for the situation – whether you’re facing many enemies or a single opponent – will help you fight smoothly and make combat easier.

Finally, this will likely motivate players to quickly unlock all of Atsu’s weapons by finding the weapon masters in each region.

Okay, so if you’re new to this game like me, I’d suggest tackling the Oni first. Seriously, get the Yari weapon before you even think about the Kitsune. Trust me, it’ll make that Kitsune boss fight way easier – I learned that the hard way!
