Meghan Morgan Juinio, a former product development director for God of War, recently spoke out in favor of using generative AI tools when making games. The use of AI in game development has been a hot topic of debate, and Juinio is the latest industry professional to support it.
Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in 2022, generative AI has quickly become a hot topic across many industries, including game development. While some developers are hesitant to use it, the technology is becoming increasingly popular and widespread.

During an interview with IGN at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Games Show, Jenova Juinio spoke in favor of using generative AI in game development. She believes AI is simply a tool to help developers, and those who avoid it are limiting their potential. Juinio argues that generative AI will continue to develop regardless of acceptance, so developers should learn to use it. She drew a comparison to established tools like SpeedTree, which has been generating game trees for over 20 years, noting it’s a similar type of technology. However, Juinio emphasized that while AI will be a permanent part of game development, it won’t replace the creativity and passion that come from human developers, who are still responsible for the core ideas behind games.

Juinio might be right – this technology isn’t likely to disappear quickly. We’ve seen recent news that companies like Sony and Microsoft are exploring generative AI for creating games, although some publishers, like Nintendo, are hesitant to adopt it.

The previous lead from God of War isn’t the only game industry professional speaking positively about generative AI. Earlier in October, an executive from Battlefield 6 described the technology as “very appealing.” Rebecka Coutaz, VP and GM of DICE and Criterion Games, clarified that while generative AI wasn’t used to create final assets for Battlefield 6, she saw a lot of potential for it during the initial stages of development.

Most developers who are open to generative AI see it as a helpful addition to game creation. However, some envision even bigger possibilities. Recently, Elon Musk announced a plan to launch a game entirely created by generative AI by the end of 2026. This idea has been met with doubt, and it’s still uncertain whether the project will succeed.
