Palworld Focuses on Indie Model and Slow Updates

Highlights

  • Takuro Mizobe, Pocket Pair’s CEO, prefers the indie model over AAA games.
  • Despite profitability, Pocket Pair doesn’t want to risk scaling up.
  • Palworld won’t receive indefinite updates as the company plans to move on to new projects.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of the gaming industry from its humble beginnings to the behemoth it is today. I’ve seen giants rise and fall, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the indie developers who dared to dream big on a shoestring budget.

In a chat with Game Spark, Palworld’s creator, Pocket Pair Inc.’s CEO, Takuro Mizobe, expressed his preference to continue operating as an independent studio instead of pursuing larger-scale development.

According to Mizobe, it seems that other businesses might be implementing comparable adjustments. However, instead of growing our operation by broadening our scope or hiring more people, we’re exploring the limits of what we can achieve as an independent company.

“It seems like other businesses might be adopting comparable strategies, yet instead of growing our operation by broadening our scope or hiring more employees, we’re exploring the limits of what we can achieve as an independent company.”

Frankly speaking, despite having made an impressive $70 million thus far, Pocket Pair has chosen to maintain its operations at their current size, as scaling up would contradict the company’s core beliefs.

Mizobe stated, “I’m drawn to creating an independent game that I find intriguing. While having a substantial budget is beneficial, I can’t afford to invest more than what I can comfortably manage.”

Currently, the company is primarily concentrating efforts on enhancing its merchandising and licensing deals, particularly collaborating with Sony to expand their influence and bolster ancillary activities.

This explains the somewhat sluggish introduction of new content. While we understand this from a business perspective, we’re naturally a touch annoyed that new goodies can’t arrivesooner.

Palworld Is Still Improving, But Not The Sole Focus

It’s important to mention that the game has undergone multiple improvements since its early access launch, demonstrating that the Pocket Pair team remains actively engaged in development.

Despite what the company leaders have said, it appears that “Palworld” won’t continue receiving updates like “Dota 2” or “League of Legends” indefinitely. Instead, they plan to shift their focus to new projects, even if “Palworld” shows promise for profitability.

The company’s goal is to keep producing quality games without major spending.

According to the Pocket Pair team, further investments won’t significantly enhance the quality of Palworld beyond its existing level. Having explored all that Palworld has to offer, I find myself in agreement with their perspective!

It’s commendable that they are committed to the independent music scene and aim to stay a determined underdog. However, it’s uncertain how this approach will pan out in real-world situations.
