Let me be honest: I haven’t been a huge Nintendo fan since I was a kid. I’m used to playing games on my PC or PlayStation, and anything else just feels uncomfortable. So, the thought of playing a game on a Switch 2 – even for work – always makes me a little anxious.

Okay, it probably sounds ridiculous, but I really prefer playing on certain consoles, and the Switch has always bothered me a little. I’m a bit of a comfort gamer, I guess! But I always try to find ways to make the experience better, whether I’m lost in a Zelda adventure, a Mario platformer, or a Pokémon journey, or anything else Nintendo throws my way.

That’s why I’m looking at this PowerA Advantage Wireless controller. I really want to make switching between systems as smooth as possible, and I think the right controller is a great place to start.

I wanted a more classic controller experience, so I tried this one out, and I’m really happy I did – it was a lot of fun to use!

Aesthetics

Okay, so let’s talk about how this controller feels. If you’re like me and grew up using Xbox controllers, you’ll feel right at home with this one – it’s got that same familiar design and comfortable grip.

The controller has a comfortable, streamlined design that fits naturally in your hands. This lets you play for extended periods without discomfort or the need for awkward grips, even during challenging gameplay.

Also, this model is lightweight and doesn’t require batteries, making it potentially even more comfortable to hold if you’re familiar with older Xbox controllers.

I chose the simple, black version of the design. It’s not fancy, but it looks really good – clean and modern. It feels like it’s made for dedicated gamers, even if they also enjoy more lighthearted Nintendo games.

If you’re looking for something more playful and unique, this controller is also available in two other designs. There’s a brightly colored Mario version, and a Pokémon version with a slightly more subtle color scheme.

Ultimately, no matter which style you prefer, you’ll get a beautifully designed device that’s comfortable to use and looks fantastic.

Unique Gameplay Features

I don’t think Nintendo is the best choice for serious competitive gamers, mainly because they’ve never had a controller that really supports that kind of play.

The PowerA controller is designed to help players of all levels improve their game. It allows you to customize the button controls, making it perfect for both relaxed gaming and competitive play, ultimately enabling high-level performance.

The controller features the standard ABXY buttons, LR and ZX/ZL triggers, but its most innovative feature is the AGR/AGL triggers on the back. These allow for incredibly fast reactions in the game.

Plus, this controller uses Hall effect sensors in its thumbsticks. Players upgrading from standard controllers will quickly notice the improved precision and feel.

The improved thumbstick controls feel smoother, react faster, and are more accurate, making challenging platforming sections much easier. Considering the ongoing issue of drifting with regular Joy-Cons – a problem that started with the original Switch – the increased durability is a welcome addition.

I can’t say how long these thumbsticks will last yet, but if they start to fail like regular Joy-Cons, I’ll be sure to update this review.

Okay, so from what I’m hearing, the Switch 2 is really focusing on making things better for serious competitive players. But honestly, it sounds like everyone will have a more comfortable and easier time playing, not just the pros. It’s a more refined setup all around, which is awesome.

Beyond features for dedicated gamers, the system also includes improvements for all players, making it easier to use than a typical Joy-Con setup.

The C button on the Switch 2 is a common frustration for players. It’s easily pressed by mistake, which unexpectedly takes you back to the home screen and interrupts gameplay.

The PowerA Advantage controller places its C button on the bottom row, right in the middle, making it easy to reach. However, it’s positioned so you won’t accidentally hit it – only when you intentionally want to. A convenient bonus: you can also control your headset volume directly from the controller, which is great for players who use game chat.

Essentially, the new controller is designed with serious gamers in mind, offering features that will improve their competitive experience on the Switch 2. However, it’s also built to be more comfortable and user-friendly for everyone, regardless of how they play.

Functionality & Battery Life

I really like this controller because it’s a great option if you’re playing at a friend’s house who doesn’t have a Switch 2 yet. Honestly, the Switch 2 is still pretty expensive unless you’re a huge fan, and this controller works perfectly well in its place.

This controller works with both the original Switch and the new Switch 2, so you can easily connect to anyone’s console. Of course, you’ll also need to make sure it’s charged to play!

The controller’s packaging claims it can last for 30 hours on a single charge, which is a good amount of playtime without needing to recharge.

As promised, the controller lasted a long time on a full charge – I got over 28 hours of gameplay before needing to recharge it.

Plus, the controller includes a 10-foot charging cable, so you can connect it directly and continue playing even while it’s charging.

Minor Gripes

Having used PowerA controllers since the original Switch, I’m familiar with their past issues. This new Advantage model is definitely an improvement with some great features, but it still has a few of the same frustrating problems that prevented me from fully loving their older versions.

If you’ve used previous versions, you’ll probably find this controller similar. While it might not be quite as good as the last one, it still makes a very noticeable clicking sound. Unless you’re using noise-cancelling headphones, the loud clicking could be distracting and negatively impact your enjoyment.

I really like the standard button layout and extra triggers. However, I think the placement of the plus and minus buttons on the bottom of the controller isn’t ideal. It would have been more convenient if they were located on either side of the Switch 2 logo for quicker access.

Despite a few small design flaws and missing features like vibration, this controller is generally well-made. It’s light but feels sturdy, and is a significant improvement over the brand’s previous models.
