The person behind popular action games like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry believes that interesting ways to play are more crucial than how good a game looks.

In a recent Famitsu interview (reported by Automaton), Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya shared his thoughts on how 3D action games have evolved and what matters most to both players and developers. Kamiya is a veteran of the action game world, having created many of its most popular titles.

As a huge fan of Kamiya’s work, it’s always fascinating to hear about his design process! He recently talked about how he starts every new game with a really unique gameplay mechanic – something you can only experience in that specific title. He used Bayonetta and Okami as examples, which makes perfect sense. In Bayonetta, the Witch Time system – dodging at the last second to slow down time – was so innovative. And Okami’s Celestial Brush, where you literally draw to affect the game world, was just brilliant. It’s clear he really focuses on creating these unforgettable, core mechanics.

The creator of Bayonetta shared that as a gamer, he prioritizes truly unique gameplay experiences over simply having better graphics. He also expressed his admiration for the progress of 3D action games, noting that while there weren’t many for a while, there’s been a recent explosion of stylish, combo-focused titles. He was particularly impressed by how easily developers can now create high-quality games.
