With Ninja Gaiden 4 now available, players are curious how it stacks up against older titles in the series. A big question is about Yakumo’s weapons – does he have enough tools to defeat all types of enemies? While the weapons offer a lot of variety in how you play, the weapon selection in NG4 is different from recent Ninja Gaiden games. Fans of the Ninja Gaiden 2 Black remaster might expect more weapons to collect. This guide will give you a complete list of all weapons in Ninja Gaiden 4, and tell you how to unlock them.
All Weapons in Ninja Gaiden 4 (& How to Unlock Them)
Weapons in NG4, Explained:
Unlike newer Ninja Gaiden games, you won’t find hidden weapons by exploring levels in Ninja Gaiden 4. Players who enjoy searching for weapons tucked away in each chapter will be disappointed. However, the improvements Platinum Games made to Yakumo’s current weapons more than make up for this change.
In Ninja Gaiden 4, new weapons aren’t just found – they’re earned through specific story moments. This means you’ll unlock them at predetermined points in the game. Some players might worry this limits combat options, but it actually enhances the experience. Although the game has fewer weapons overall – Yakumo uses five main types – the ability to switch between them instantly makes combat incredibly smooth and satisfying.
I’m really enjoying NG4, and one thing that’s struck me is how distinct each weapon feels. You’ll find yourself swapping weapons a lot during fights, especially if you’re aiming for a high score. The coolest part is the skills each weapon has – it lets you really build a character around the weapons you love. It’s weird, but even though there aren’t tons of weapons, Platinum managed to make combat feel way more varied and customizable!
Yakumo’s Weapon List:

Yakumo can use five different weapons, and you unlock them as you progress through the story. Here’s a list:
- Takeminakata – Twin Blade/Tachi: Unlocked at the start of the game. Yakumo’s main weapon.
- Yatousen – Rapier/Lance: The second weapon Yakumo unlocks. It is found holding the first Dark Dragon seal in place. You’ll collect it at the end of Chapter 3, and gain access to it at the start of Chapter 4.
- Magatsuhi – Staff/Hammer: The third addition to Yakumo’s arsenal. Removed from the seal at the end of Chapter 7, available to use at the start of Chapter 8.
- Kage-Hiruko – Assassin’s Tools/Mechanical Arms: This will be the final addition to Yakumo’s main arsenal, which are assigned to each button on the D-Pad. This will be removed from the seal at the end of Chapter 10, and available for use at the start of Chapter 11.
- Dark Dragon Sword – Sword of Evil: This will be the true final weapon, but Yakumo will only have access to it in Chapter 19, Ninja Gaiden 4‘s final chapter. You’ll need to defeat a very important enemy early in the chapter to gain access to this weapon, which will take you through the end of the game.
Warning! Story Spoiler Ahead!
Second Playable Character’s Weapon:
Starting with Chapter 14 in NG4, you’ll switch from playing as Yakumo to playing as Ryu Hayabusa until Chapter 18. Ryu only uses his iconic Dragon Sword – a familiar weapon for long-time fans. Instead of different weapons on the D-Pad, Ryu uses a variety of Ninpo abilities.
This page lists every weapon currently found in Ninja Gaiden 4. We’ll update it right away if any new weapons are released through downloadable content or updates.
