This post contains spoilers for One Piece Episode 1114.

Recently, the storyline in One Piece has centered around the land of Blackbeard, known as Hachinosu. After seizing control of the island, Blackbeard transformed it into his primary stronghold. Consequently, when rumors of Koby’s disappearance began to spread, it was evident that Blackbeard had likely transported the young Marine to Hachinosu.

It took some time for the anime to reveal the motive behind the kidnapping; Blackbeard aimed to use Koby as a means to negotiate with the World Government. However, this plan was temporarily halted when he learned that Koby belonged to SWORD. Consequently, he left Koby under the supervision of the Ten Titanic Captains on Hachinosu. Since the Marines had no duty to save him due to his SWORD membership, Garp stepped up. He assembled a group of young yet gifted Marines and set sail for Hachinosu. Among them was Prince Grus.

  • Rank: Rear Admiral
  • Affiliation: SWORD

In the narrative, Prince Grus initially appeared as part of Capone Bege’s fabricated tale. Later on, the Rear Admiral was spotted conversing with Helmeppo at the G-14 base, where Helmeppo expressed a desire to save Koby. At first, Prince Grus refused due to the mission’s perilous nature. However, after Garp visited the G-14 base, it seems that his stance has shifted.

My puppets are not so easy to take down. —Prince Grus

Prince Grus traveled to Hachinosu and was one of the few Marines who immediately landed on the island. He used the Gunyo Gunyo no Mi to create clay puppets and used them to push the pirates into the corner. The criminals had no idea that they were clay puppets, and they kept firing bullets in hopes of stopping them. Prince Grus’ Devil Fruit came in handy yet again to cushion the fall of Garp’s ship. Without the Gunyo Gunyo no Mi, the ship would have sustained serious damage, leaving the Marines without an escape route. The Gunyo Gunyo no Mi exhibits signs of a Logia-type Devil Fruit, but it is unconfirmed whether it falls within the category. The only other class that the Devil Fruit can belong to is Paramecia.

The Limitations Of The Gunyo Gunyo no Mi

The Gunyo Gunyo no Mi Is Not Without Flaws

One Piece: Prince Grus' Gunyo Gunyo no Mi, Explained

If the Gunyo Gunyo no Mi is a Logia-type Devil Fruit, it’s one of the more powerful abilities in One Piece. Yet, even such a fruit has its limitations. With the advent of Haki, fans know that users of Logia-type Devil Fruits can be harmed. Consequently, if Prince Grus encounters an opponent with superior Haki skills, Rear Admiral Grus would find himself in a difficult situation, unable to defend himself no matter his efforts.

Clay is a material found in nature that artists use for pottery. When wet, clay can be molded into various shapes. But once heated, it hardens and becomes solid. This means if Prince Grus were to face someone with the Mera Mera no Mi, he might find himself at a disadvantage. Unlike before when he could shift his body freely, after being affected by this power, his body would stiffen and become brittle, making it easier for him to be broken apart.

Will Prince Grus Have A Big Role To Play In The Future?

Prince Grus Along With Several Others Will Change The Marines

Given his relatively few appearances so far, it’s challenging to predict the significance of Prince Grus within the storyline of One Piece. However, taking into account that he was introduced in the Final Saga, we can speculate that he may play a larger role than some other Marines. Additionally, his youth sets him apart, positioning him as part of the upcoming generation of soldiers. Given the story’s trajectory, many high-ranking individuals are expected to step down. Thus, there’s a possibility that Prince Grus could ascend in rank before the series ends.

While Grus may vie for the top positions, he won’t be the sole contender. Characters like Smoker, Koby, and Kujaku also possess remarkable abilities. Smoker is a Vice Admiral who came close to thwarting Luffy’s ambitions early on. He’s been absent from recent storylines, possibly hinting at a significant role in upcoming arcs. Koby is a SWORD member, already bearing the title of Hero, placing him among the elite. Garp has even labeled him as the Marine’s future, suggesting a crucial part in the series. His dream is to become an Admiral, and with his current progression, it seems inevitable. Lastly, Kujaku, granddaughter of the legendary Marine Tsuru, displayed her formidable power during the Egghead arc. Her control over the Muchi Muchi no Mi is impressive, and it’s expected to grow stronger. Given her lineage, there are high expectations for Kujaku, and hopefully, she’ll meet them.
