How Heat Works in Deathbound

How Heat Works in Deathbound

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the Heat system in Deathbound has certainly piqued my interest. Coming from someone who’s dabbled in a fair share of RPGs and action-adventure games, I can appreciate the intricacy and depth this mechanic brings to the table.

In the game Deathbound, you can collect a total of 7 distinct Essences throughout your playthrough, each offering a unique gaming experience. Despite their differences, there are fundamental systems that these Essences share. For instance, both Therone and Mamdile employ the Parry technique, whereas Therone, Iulia, and Agharos make use of Perfect Blocking. Lastly, the Heat system is common to Tehkri Haodai, Mamdile Ogate, and Olivia Heinz, serving as the basis for their spell casting or core damage.

Mastering this system and learning how to apply it effectively is crucial when working with these Essences within the game, Deathbound. Fortunately, the system itself is quite straightforward once you get the hang of it. To ensure that newcomers to Deathbound, especially those unfamiliar with similar systems, can easily grasp the Heat system, let’s provide a comprehensive overview of how it functions.

Heat System Overview

How it Works & How to Keep Track of It

Heat in Deathbound is a core mechanic that any of the Essences who use magic rely on and it basically functions as their MP. Tehkri Haodai will be your first chance to experience the Heat System, as he is a prodigy Essencemancer who has a direct damage spell (that inflicts Corruption), a spell that puts a puddle of poisonous Corruption on the ground, a spell that buffs his allies melee weapons with Corruption and a damage/debuffing Spell he can inflict on enemies. Each spell will generate different amounts of Heat, and once Tehkri reaches Max Heat, which is where his hands glow a bright red/orange and his Essence Icon is filled with red, any Spell he casts, while it’s in the red, will cause a Heat Explosion (this can also deal damage to nearby enemies).

As a devoted fan, I’ve discovered an essential aspect of navigating Tehkri in the captivating game Deathbound – managing his Heat level. Unlike a ticking time bomb, Tehkri won’t explode immediately if you push him into the red. Instead, given some patience, this Heat will naturally dissipate over time, a process I like to call ‘Cool Down.’

The Characters That Use Heat

Tehkri Haodai, Olivia Heinz, & Mamdile Ogate

Let’s delve into the specifics of how Heat operates for the three in-game Essences that require it. We’ve primarily discussed Tehkri’s interaction with the Heat system, but let’s explore how Mamdile Ogate and Olivia Heinz fit into this mechanism as well. Here’s a breakdown of how their core attacks are designed around the Heat system:

  • Tehkri Haodai: Basic spellcaster, as he casts spells, his Heat grows, and causes an Overheat Explosion if spells are cast at Max Heat.
  • Mamdile Ogate: Melee attacker who generates heat as he fights with his Capoeria-influenced fighting style. The higher his Heat, the more damage he’ll deal, so you’ll want to keep Mamdile’s Heat in the red whenever you can. Additionally, Mamdile doesn’t ever trigger an Overheat Explosion, and will instead just maintain his red Heat Level for as long as he attacks.
  • Olivia Heinz: Olivia Heinz is very similar to Tehkri in how she uses Heat. In fact, they use it the exact same way, with the only difference being the amount of Heat generated from Olivia’s spells and the intention behind her spells. While Tehkri is a basic spellcaster who only inflicts Corruption, Olivia is an Elemental Spellcaster who utilizes Lightning, Ice, and Fire and as such can inflict more Status Ailments than Tehkri can.

As a devoted fan of Deathbound, I’ve come to realize that a significant aspect of the game revolves around the intricate relationship between spells and the Heat System. This connection can either amplify the damage output at varying Heat levels or facilitate Heat Decay, essentially forming the ‘heart’ of a mage build in this game. On the other hand, melee builds thrive when focusing on damage, defense, or Attack Weight.
