At the beginning of The Outer Worlds 2, you can quickly switch between two weapons. If you want to use a different weapon during a fight, you’ll have to pause and go to the inventory menu, which can be frustrating. Luckily, the game lets you unlock more weapon slots so you can carry and switch to more weapons easily. This guide will show you how to do it.
Unlocking More Weapon Equip Slots in The Outer Worlds 2
You can get more slots for equipping weapons in one of two ways: by using special modifications to your armor, or by learning a skill or trait that adds an extra slot. I’ll explain how to do both below.
Using ‘Extra Holster’ Armor Mods
To get an extra weapon slot, you need to find an armor modification called ‘Extra Holster.’ This mod, as the name suggests, adds another slot for carrying a weapon. I’ve found you can buy it from a vendor in Paradise. Alternatively, you can steal it by going through the door to the right of the vendor, closing the door behind you, and grabbing it from the bottom shelf – a screenshot showing its location is available above.
If you can’t locate or purchase the item, you can create it yourself. It requires 25 Cloth and can be crafted at any workbench, or using the crafting options available through Nile’s Field Tinkering skill.
You can discover the Extra Holster mod while exploring the game world, but it’s fairly rare, so it might take some searching, especially when you first start playing.
After locating the mod, open a workbench and choose “Mods.” Then, pick the item you want to modify and select the mod from the list on the right side of your screen.
Once you’ve added a modification to an item, it’s permanent. For example, if you remove a piece of armor with the ‘Extra Holster’ mod, you’ll also lose the extra weapon slot it provided. So, think carefully before applying any mods!
Unlocking the Commando Perk
The quickest way to gain an extra weapon slot is by unlocking the Commando perk. You only need to put one skill point into either Melee or Guns, and it will unlock permanently. Best of all, there are no further requirements – once unlocked, you’ll have the extra weapon slot available indefinitely.
You can unlock two extra weapon slots, giving you a total of four to equip. To do this, you’ll need to combine the Commando perk with the Extra Holster armor mod – you can even use two of the Extra Holster mods if you prefer.
