The Outer Worlds 2 offers a much larger and more connected experience than the original game, giving players more choices and consequences. With bigger, more detailed worlds to explore, it can be overwhelming to decide where to start your adventure.
When you begin playing Outer Worlds 2, take some time to create your character and get comfortable with the gameplay. Once the initial section at Horizon Point is finished, this guide will help you figure out what to do next and where to go on Paradise Island. It will get you started on the main story and point you toward some optional things to discover along the way.
Choose Your Background, Traits, & Skills
You Can Build Into Anything, But Starting Choices Affect Early-Game Options
When you start Outer Worlds 2, your first step should be deciding what kind of character you want to create. Choose a background, traits, and skills during character creation that match your vision. While you can develop your character in any direction as you play, your initial choices will set the stage for your entire experience.
Spend time thoughtfully building your character’s history, personality, and abilities – choose options that appeal to you! Remember, core elements of your character can’t be altered later, so make sure you’re happy with your decisions.
Complete The Introduction & Choose a Level 2 Perk
After The Title Card Drops, You’ll Have A Chance to Respec, Too
The game The Outer Worlds 2 begins with a mission where you sneak into a Protectorate base, setting up the main storyline and overall goals. During this initial section, you’ll reach Level 2 and earn your first Perk point to customize your character.
You’ll earn Perk Points every two levels, beginning at level 2 – so you’ll receive a Perk at every even level. Plus, if you’re unhappy with your character’s initial setup, you’ll have a chance to adjust your background, traits, and skills after you first wake up aboard the Incognito.
Take Time To Explore the Incognito
Look For a Secret Safe, Crafting Bench, & Pet Area
Once you’ve woken up and gotten your bearings, and decided if you want to change your character’s skills, take a walk through the Incognito. Ten years have passed since the events at Horizon Point, and the area has fallen into disrepair. Before heading to Niles, be sure to find a few important items.
You’ll find a hidden safe in your old room – check behind the desk where you originally got your ID. There’s also a crafting bench in the room across the hall from where you first woke up in the medical bay, and a pet area right past that.
After you’ve finished exploring the Incognito, go to the bridge to find Niles. He made it through the explosion you saw at the beginning of the game.
Arrive in Paradise & Explore Fairfield
Vendors, Side Quests, & Main Story Hooks
Once you’ve spoken with Niles, your next destination is Paradise, where the main story of Outer Worlds 2 begins. After you arrive, make your way northwest to Fairfield, a sizable town now under the control of Auntie’s Choice, a powerful company that recently took over this area previously governed by the Protectorate.
Fairfield is located in the heart of Paradise Island and will be your home base during your visit. It’s full of interesting people, quirky shops, funny situations, and opportunities to start new missions, so take the time to explore every nook and cranny!
Talk to Milverstreet and Kaur In Fairfield
Decide Who To Trust To Find A Way Into The Vox Relay
Once you’ve had a chance to look around Fairfield, head to the main building in the upper-left part of town, right under the large Auntie Cleo hologram. Inside, you’ll find two of Auntie Cleo’s managers on a video call with her. After Auntie Cleo points out the poor security, they’ll both turn to face you.
You can work with either Kaur or Minister Milverstreet, but not both, to handle the Protectorate forces in the area. Either choice will give you a key clue about the main story and a path to the Vox Relay, which you’ll need to complete the final mission on Paradise.
Find Unique Gadgets & Other Tools On Paradise
Unlock Double Jump, Self-Shield, & Other Useful Skills On Paradise

You can find a few helpful items only on Paradise, like the jump boots and the self-shield gadget.
- The P.A.L.E. (Plasmatic Augmented Leap Enhancer) boots grant you the ability to double jump, but they can only be activated if you aren’t falling at a high velocity – so no saving yourself from deadly fall damage!
- These can be found on a freshly-dead body just beneath a towering lift that seems to be stuck up in the air, southwest of Fairfield. You will be directed to this location as part of Senior Warden Weintraut’s mission to return dissenting Protectorate members to the bridge north of Fairfield.
- The Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus is essentially a temporary shield Gadget that can also mitigate status effects and environmental hazard damage. You can swap to this Gadget instead of your Time Dialation device.
- Look for the auto-mech facility in the far east of the southern island, south of Westport, and complete the mission ‘Vanquishing the Vexing Vapors’ by dealing with the Zyranium leak infesting the facility.
Even though you’ll probably visit these places during other quests, it’s a good idea to find them as soon as possible. They’ll make it much easier to survive, move around, and climb.
Pick Up The Science Magazine Collection Quest For Paradise
Progress ‘In Pursuit of Purloined Propaganda’ By Finding All Science Magazines
Once you find a copy of Science Adventures Quarterly in Outer Worlds 2, the quest ‘In Pursuit of Purloined Propaganda’ will begin. This quest sends you to Redactor Quisnel, who needs you to find all the scattered Science magazines around the island – magazines she insists aren’t from her private stash.
The game features side quests in each of its four main areas. On the Paradise region, one quest asks you to locate all ten copies of Science magazine. You can begin this quest by either finding the magazines or going directly to Redactor Quisnel, who lives in a shack west of Fairfield.
