Beyond Galaxyland is a perfect fusion of action, exploration, and heart | Hands-on preview

As a seasoned space-faring adventurer who’s traversed countless galaxies and battled alien creatures of all shapes and sizes, I can confidently say that Beyond Galaxyland has captured my heart like no other game has in recent memory. With its enticing blend of humor, epic space opera elements, and engaging combat, it’s a cosmic rollercoaster ride that I can’t get enough of.

In my opinion, Beyond Galaxyland stands out quite uniquely. The brief sneak peek I had earlier was merely an appetizer, but recently, I immersed myself for a full three hours, and I’m smitten. It offers everything I yearn for in an RPG, boasting the ideal blend of tone, humor, and grandeur that embodies an epic space opera with high stakes. If the rest of the game maintains this level of engagement, we’re in for a real treat! The combat is captivating, the puzzles are cleverly designed, and the writing is exceptionally well-crafted. Buckle up, everyone!

Experiencing the origin of Beyond Galaxyland sparked my curiosity as I followed Doug’s journey along with his pet hamster into this vast cosmos known as Galaxyland, and discovering the initial planets filled me with excitement. When I first started playing it, I was eager to understand the unique vibe each planet possessed, their size, the challenges and experiences they offered, and how one travels between them. The exploration process feels organic, yet when on a planet, there’s no aimless roaming. Every location has purpose.

On the primary planet of the galaxy named Beyond Galaxyland lies Erros, a place that echoes Earth’s essence, teeming with intriguing characters and lively, bustling surroundings. This is where I embarked on an adventure that led me to delve into sewers, grasp combat mechanics, solve environmental conundrums, and command my inaugural spaceship. Along the way, I encountered Meela, a scientist yearning for cosmic exploration, discovered a power cell following the defeat of a colossal ape, and crossed paths with an enigmatic figure called the Malefactor. Everything about it is simply exhilarating!

In Beyond Galaxyland, I was cracking up left and right! The banter between Doug, Boom Boom (who’s now an anthropomorphic hamster with a blaster), and the enigmatic MartyBot kept me hooked. I was this kid who learned Earth was gone, only to be “rescued” by DreamCore, a questionable organization. My Earthly companion, Boom Boom, turned out to be something else entirely, and MartyBot, a robot working for DreamCore, wasn’t as sinister as he initially seemed. As the game unfolded, their camaraderie grew on me, and while there were plenty of laughs, it was the underlying warmth that truly touched my heart.

As a gamer, all I yearn for is to return home, check if Earth still exists, and reunite with my parents. However, as my journey leads me from Erros towards Neo’s capital planet, I realize there’s something far more sinister at play. In one chilling scene that undoubtedly drew inspiration from Metal Gear Solid, I stumble upon a corridor within some facility, littered with lifeless bodies and splattered with blood on the walls. A mysterious figure known as Malefactor is behind it, but the question remains – why? What in the world is happening here? Unfortunately, the preview ends before I could uncover more details, but boy, that rush of adrenaline was intense!

In the previous sneak peek, I briefly mentioned battles, now let’s delve deeper into it. This time, I got to witness Summons in action. The fights are turn-based, much like typical JRPGs, and they follow a consistent rhythm. One exciting aspect of Beyond Galaxyland is the option to snap pictures of creatures to display an adversary’s stats, as well as capture them for use as summons during battle. Each summon has distinct abilities and elemental attributes, allowing you to select from various ones and vary your attacks, boost your team, or heal HP.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I am thoroughly captivated by the game Beyond Galaxyland, which has piqued my curiosity and excitement levels to new heights. Having played countless titles throughout the years, I can confidently assert that this upcoming release could potentially rank among the best games of 2024 if it maintains its current level of excellence.

In Galaxyland, it seems as if I’m stepping into a giant video game, and I can’t wait to explore every single planet and discover what lies in store for me there. Apart from Erros and Neo, my journey took me to an icy planet where I assisted the locals, earning myself a new summon – a penguin! It’s absurdly fun, and though the adventure is vast and thrilling, each planet is meticulously designed. The art style gives it a broader perspective, and I’m convinced I’ve barely begun to uncover its secrets.

Although it may not be something you’re currently focusing on, I trust that once you’ve finished reading this, you’ll give it a closer look. This game could very well be a strong candidate for Game of the Year, and my enthusiasm might seem excessive following a preview, but let me assure you, I’ve played through two sections of Beyond Galaxyland, and haven’t found a single aspect that I dislike. Reminiscent of both The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Pokémon, there are countless reasons to adore Sam Enright’s RPG. I’m eagerly looking forward to delving deeper into the mysteries of Galaxyland.
