As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive RPGs and a soft spot for the creative genius of Arkane Studios alumni, I am beyond thrilled about Wolfeye Studio’s upcoming first-person action RPG! The tantalizing hints of retro sci-fi aesthetics have me yearning to traverse futuristic landscapes with the same sense of wonder and exploration that Dishonored and Prey instilled in me.

Wolfeye Studios, a team primarily made up of ex-Arkane Studios members, has started sharing initial information about their second game, a mystery first-person action RPG that is now open for private alpha signups. They’ve also given us a sneak peek at their upcoming project with some unique visuals.

In 2019, Raphael Colantonio, the former head of Arkane Studios (renowned for games like Arx Fatalis, Prey, and the Dishonored series), established Wolfeye Studios. Seeking more creative autonomy, he decided to depart from AAA development to explore fresh opportunities and embrace riskier ideas. The studio’s debut title, Weird West, an immersive RPG with isometric gameplay and sim elements, was launched in March 2022 to critical acclaim.

Wolfeye’s Retro Sci-Fi First-Person ARPG Starts Active Development

At the Game Developers Conference in March 2024, Wolfeye Studio hinted at its upcoming game during their presentation by displaying a whiteboard with the words “first person” and “retro sci-fi.” Five months later, they’ve confirmed that this teaser indeed referred to their next project. This secretive first-person role-playing game has now moved from pre-production into active development, according to Wolfeye. The Texas-based studio provided three images from the untitled project, which depict a rustic canyon and various pieces of retro-futuristic machinery, such as a workshop robot and an ominous drone.

Wolfeye Opens Closed Alpha Signups For Its Mysterious Game

Enthusiasts captivated by the idea of a personally-experienced sci-fi action RPG from the creators of ‘Dishonored’ and ‘Prey’ can now register for an opportunity to join the game’s exclusive preliminary testing on Wolfeye’s official website. The team has yet to disclose specifics about the size or objectives of this testing phase, but they have confirmed that participation will be limited. This trial is scheduled to commence in 2025.

Although “Weird West” was released by Devolver Digital, Wolfeye Studios are currently seeking a suitable publishing partner for their upcoming project, as stated in an official release. Regarding the 2025 alpha test, which is closed, Colantonio, president and creative director of Wolfeye, described it as a representation of the studio’s desire to engage its fans more actively in the development of their next project. In fact, this approach was already implemented with “Weird West”, which underwent a closed beta test prior to its early 2022 launch.

Colantonio hints that enthusiasts of previous Arkane Studios games he worked on, such as Prey and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, will likely find a familiar atmosphere in Wolfeye’s upcoming game, along with RPG enthusiasts in general. If Wolfeye’s first-person RPG were to adhere to a development path similar to Weird West, it could potentially launch as early as 2027. Given that Wolfeye’s initial title is being developed for multiple platforms, it’s reasonable to assume that their next project will also be released on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, in addition to PC. However, the Austin-based studio has yet to confirm which platforms the new game will be available on officially.
