With the upcoming releases of Sonic X Shadow Generations and Shadow’s appearance in the third live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film in 2024, Sega has declared it “The Year of Shadow.” This is due to the character’s upcoming big-screen debut and the impending launch of Sonic X Shadow Generations. 2005’s spin-off game titled “Shadow the Hedgehog” brought motorcycle-riding anti-hero Shadow into the limelight as the main character. In a tweet thread dedicated to Shadow-related trivia, Person108 shared an interesting fact: it’s possible for a second player to control the helper characters that appear in Shadow’s adventures across the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube versions. These helpers significantly impact the gameplay of “Shadow the Hedgehog”, as aiding Sonic, Dr. Eggman, or the alien Black Doom in completing specific tasks can unlock new levels and alternative endings.

In addition to this, it’s worth noting that players have the chance to operate Maria Robotnik, Shadow’s closest friend whose untimely death 50 years prior to the series serves as one of the darkest episodes in the Sonic the Hedgehog saga. In the game Shadow the Hedgehog, Maria is featured in two flashback stages as the “Hero” support character, leading Shadow through the depths of the ill-fated Space Colony Ark and urging him to employ his abilities for a higher purpose. If Shadow chooses the path of virtue, a second player can join forces with him, using some form of radiant punch technique.
Few people know that the main story campaign in the game “Shadow the Hedgehog” includes cooperative play, a feature that was not heavily emphasized in its marketing. In addition, the abilities of the second player were less extensive than those of Shadow. However, this is significant because it’s the only time Maria Robotnik has been playable in a “Sonic the Hedgehog” game, making it an interesting fact for fans during the “Year of Shadow.”
