Best Horror Games With Crossplay

While Halloween brings spooky vibes, multiplayer horror games are popular throughout the year. It seems counterintuitive – horror and teamwork don’t always mix, as being with friends can lessen the fear. However, Steam has many 4-player horror games where you and your friends try to gather items or finish a task before a monster or dangerous group finds you. Even well-known series like Resident Evil have experimented with cooperative horror, with varying degrees of success.

It’s usually easy enough to find games to play with friends, but finding horror games that work on different devices (like PC and consoles) is much harder. Most of the time, everyone needs to be on the same platform. However, some of the biggest horror games do allow cross-platform play.

The Outlast Trials

The Most Intense Group Therapy Sessions Ever

Red Barrels, known for creating intensely frightening single-player games like Outlast, took a big risk with The Outlast Trials by turning it into a multiplayer experience. Though quite different from the original games, The Outlast Trials still manages to be truly terrifying, filled with disturbing scenes, clever writing, and difficult puzzles. Players can team up with up to three friends to attempt the trials, but surviving will be a real challenge.

Similar to other games in the Outlast series, Trials focuses on classic survival horror. You’ll need to avoid enemies and hide from them, as the game doesn’t allow you to fight back. The gameplay is straightforward but works well, and you can keep coming back for more by attempting different trials and improving your character. Finding temporary power-ups during each run also keeps things interesting.

If you want a genuinely scary crossplay co-op horror game, The Outlast Trials is your best option.

7 Days to Die

Survive With Friends In A Zombie Hellscape

When it first came out about ten years ago, 7 Days to Die was largely disliked by critics. However, it didn’t just survive – it became a major hit in the horror multiplayer gaming world. Most online horror games offer short experiences, but 7 Days to Die stands out with its large open world, challenging players to last as long as possible by building bases, fighting zombies, and gathering supplies.

Over the past few years, the developers of 7 Days to Die have streamlined the game, guiding players towards a specific playstyle. However, it’s still a really enjoyable and captivating game, particularly when played with friends. While console servers typically support up to four players, playing on a PC-hosted server with crossplay enabled allows for up to eight.

Dead By Daylight

The Definitive Multiplayer Crossplay Horror Game

Most fans of multiplayer horror are already familiar with Dead by Daylight. It’s a hugely popular game available on many platforms, and players often purchase extra content featuring iconic horror characters. Behaviour Interactive added crossplay in 2020, which has helped the game thrive by making it much easier to find matches on any system.

When it comes to 4v1 horror games, Dead by Daylight (DBD) is the clear leader, and no other game has achieved the same level of popularity. The core gameplay is easy to understand: four survivors work to power up generators and escape, while a killer tries to capture and eliminate them all. The game offers a lot of replayability thanks to its diverse cast of characters, each with unique abilities and playstyles. Players can focus on using the most effective characters, or simply choose their favorites and enjoy the experience.

Phasmophobia

There are many ghost hunting games on Steam, but few make it to consoles. That’s what makes Phasmophobia special – it’s available on consoles and is widely considered one of the best horror investigation games. Players take on contracts to investigate haunted locations and identify the type of ghost present. They use various tools – some provided, others they must purchase and risk losing during their investigations.

Phasmophobia offers a ton of replayability with over 10 maps and 20 different ghosts. The game’s ‘hunts’ are cleverly crafted to create genuinely scary—and often hilarious—moments when playing with friends. What’s great is that it supports crossplay across all platforms, meaning even players using PSVR2 can join games with those on regular consoles.

World War Z: Aftermath

A Worldwide Trip With Friends And Zombies

Several four-player zombie shooter games let you play with friends on different platforms, but it’s not always available. Back 4 Blood offers crossplay and is a solid choice, while Killing Floor 3 is newer but opinions are mixed. Call of Duty games, starting with Black Ops Cold War, usually include crossplay for their zombie modes, and these modes are often the most fun part of the game. Zombie Army 4: Dead War also offers some crossplay functionality.

As a fan, I’d say World War Z really nails that fast-paced zombie shooter feel, and it’s especially great if you like playing from a third-person perspective. But the Aftermath version is where it really shines – it’s one of the most fun cooperative zombie experiences out there, though you definitely need to team up with friends to get the most out of it. The campaign is pretty lengthy, taking you all over the globe, and the sheer size of the zombie hordes is incredible. Honestly, the gameplay is super solid, and it balances intense action with genuinely scary moments better than a lot of other games in the genre.

The online servers for World War Z: Aftermath aren’t very active, so finding matches with random players is usually difficult. It’s best not to count on that.
